We read ten competing handmade-gift sites carefully before building this one. Between them they published hundreds of product lists and almost nothing else. Not one explained how to tell whether an item described as handmade actually was. Not one told a reader what to do with a wooden board in its first week, which is when most of them get ruined. That gap is the reason this section is here, and it is the part of the site we expect to be most useful a year after you buy something.

The literacy guides: what is real

Start with what handmade actually means, which is the definitional one — there is no legal definition in the United States, which is precisely why the word gets used so loosely. Then spotting resold mass production, which is the practical version: the specific signals in a listing that tell you a seller has bought a pallet of something and photographed it on a nice table.

A handmade object costs two to three times its factory equivalent and, cared for, lasts ten times as long. Uncared for, it lasts about the same. That ratio is the entire argument for reading this section, and it takes about four minutes per material.

Three questions come up constantly and none of them is really about a product. Whether buying handmade genuinely helps a maker is covered in support small makers. Whether handmade means American is covered in made in USA handmade gifts — the answer is often no, and the reasons are interesting. And whether handmade is meaningfully more sustainable is in sustainable handmade gifts, which is more complicated than the marketing suggests.

The practical ones
