Amazon Handmade vs Etsy

The honest framing

A great deal of writing on this comparison treats it as a moral question — the ethical independent marketplace versus the corporate giant. That framing does not survive contact with the facts. Both are large public companies taking a cut of a maker's sale. Etsy is a marketplace with over a hundred million listings; it stopped being a craft fair a long time ago.

What is genuinely worth comparing is the rules, the selection and the buying experience, because those differ substantially and they affect what you get.

The comparison

What Amazon Handmade is better at

The gate. Sellers apply and are reviewed against a written standard before they can list at all. Etsy's model is open sign-up with policy enforcement afterwards, which is a fundamentally different posture — one filters at entry, the other reacts to problems.

The buying experience. Standard returns, Amazon customer service, frequently Prime shipping, and one account you already have. For a gift with a deadline, that reliability is worth a lot, and it is the reason this site is built on Handmade.

What Etsy is better at

Selection, overwhelmingly. Etsy is many times larger and covers categories Handmade barely touches. If you are looking for something specific and unusual, Etsy has it and Handmade may not — our own fiber pages note exactly this problem with hand-knitted blankets.

Direct maker contact. Etsy shop pages tend to be richer, the messaging culture is more established, and custom commissions are more normal. If you want to talk to the person making the thing, Etsy is set up for it in a way Handmade is not.

Where Etsy's rules are looser

Etsy permits handmade, vintage (twenty years or older) and craft supplies, which is three categories rather than one, and it also allows makers to work with production partners. Those are legitimate policies with reasonable arguments behind them, and they mean the word handmade covers more ground on Etsy than it does on Handmade.

The practical consequence for a buyer is that the checks in spotting resold mass production matter more on the larger, more open marketplace. They are worth running on either.

Which we use, and why

This site is built almost entirely on Amazon Handmade, and the reasons are practical rather than ideological: the marketplace-level prohibition on mass production is a fact we can record and you can check, the returns are predictable, and there is an API that lets us pull live prices and delete them when they go stale.

That is a set of trade-offs, not a verdict. If you are shopping for yourself rather than reading a gift guide, using both is obviously correct. Etsy alternatives covers the rest of the field.
