The reason occasion-based gift guides are usually useless is that they treat the occasion as decoration: here is a list of nice things, now imagine them at a wedding. But an occasion is really a set of constraints, and the constraints are what make the decision. A housewarming gift has to survive being carried to a house you have not seen. A wedding gift is going to sit in a pile with forty others and has to be identifiable when the thank-you notes are written. A retirement gift needs a date on it or it is just an object.

Weddings, retirements and anniversaries reward a date or a name because the object is standing in for a memory. This is the one place personalization is almost always right.

Volume

Stocking stuffers, corporate gifting and teacher gifts mean buying the same thing five or thirty times. Price per head is the whole problem, and handmade at scale needs a longer lead time.

Seasonal deadline

Christmas, Mother's Day and Valentine's have a fixed date that every other buyer shares. Small makers hit capacity weeks before the deadline, not days.

Q4 is different, and worth planning around

From the beginning of November, handmade marketplaces stop behaving like the rest of the year. Made-to-order lead times stretch from days to weeks. Popular items from single-person workshops sell out and do not restock. And the shipping cutoffs that big retailers publish in mid-December do not apply, because the bottleneck is not the courier — it is one person at a bench.
