5th anniversary wood gifts
The engraved teak tray is the one to buy. Teak is oily enough to shrug off water, which makes a keepsake object unusually practical, and the engraving takes two names and the year — the right gift for a couple five years in who host, and whose anniversary object should be in use rather than on a shelf.

The one we would not buy
Bamboo sold as wood, and engraved plaques
Two different failures that both turn up at the top of this search. Bamboo is a grass, and the bamboo gift sets are pressed sheet rather than solid timber — they serve food adequately and they will not survive being used as a working board, which is why the one bamboo item on this site is labelled factory-made. The engraved plaque is the other trap: a flat disc of wood with the date laser-burned into it satisfies the convention and does nothing else, which makes it a puzzle answer rather than a gift. Buy an object that would be worth owning with nothing written on it.
The picks, in full

Engraved Teak Tray with Handles
For a couple who host, and want two names and a year on something that gets carried. Teak, handled, and engraved with names and the established year.
Teak is the outlier among serving woods: it is oily enough to shrug off water, which is why it ends up on boats and in bathrooms. That makes an engraved teak tray unusually practical for something bought as a keepsake. This is the top end of the tray category and it earns the price on material.

Cherry Burl Bowl, One of a Kind
For the partner who will actually turn the bowl over and look at the grain. A turned burl bowl, and burl is why the grain does that.
Burl is the wart on a tree: a knot of disordered growth where the grain swirls instead of running straight. It is the most figured wood available and it is difficult to turn without it coming apart on the lathe, which is why a burl bowl costs what it does. Every one is different because the tree decided the pattern, not the maker.
Worth knowing first
One-off piece. What arrives will not look identical to the photograph, which is the point.

Custom Engraved Walnut Board, 9 x 12 in with Groove
by Independent maker
For a kitchen that needs one good board, engraved in the border rather than the middle. Solid walnut with a juice groove, engraved to order, at around fifty dollars.
A juice groove is the detail that separates a carving board from a chopping board: it catches what comes out of a roast instead of sending it across the counter. Add walnut rather than a pale budget hardwood and you have a personalized gift that stands up on its own terms. This is the version to buy if the engraved boards above feel too thin.

Ranch Junkie Wood Heart Bowl, Medium
by Ranch Junkie Mercantile
For a heart-shaped gift that is a real carved bowl first and a shape second. A heart-shaped carved bowl, which is a shape that usually goes badly and here does not.
Heart-shaped objects fail when the shape is the only idea. This one survives because it is a real carved bowl first: the walls are thick, the finish is bare wood, and the heart reads as a form rather than a motif. Medium size means it holds keys or fruit rather than being purely ornamental.

Carolina Country 26 in Farmhouse Table Centerpiece Tray
For a long dining table that looks empty every day between meals. A 26-inch rectangular tray built to hold candles down the middle of a table.
This solves a specific and common problem: a long table with nothing on it. Fill it with the beeswax pillars from the candles section and the whole thing becomes one gift with two parts. Made in the USA per the listing, with a choice of finishes.

Extra-Large Black Walnut Edge Grain Board, 40 in, with Handles
For a fifth anniversary with a three-figure budget and a long table to fill. Forty inches of black walnut with built-in handles and rubber feet.
This is a table-runner-sized serving board, and there is essentially no mass-market equivalent because the material cost at this length is prohibitive. Built-in handles and feet mean it can be carried loaded and set down without scratching. It is a statement purchase and it should be treated as one.
Worth knowing first
Forty inches. Confirm the table and the storage before ordering.

Engraved Wooden Spoon with Custom Message
For a baker, when the wood year has to be satisfied on a small budget. One solid beech spoon, engraved with a name or a line, for around twenty dollars.
The engraved-spoon gift works because it is a working object with something personal on the handle: it goes in the crock and gets picked up rather than being displayed and forgotten. Solid beech, engraved to order. It is also one of the few personalized items cheap enough to give to more than one person.

Decorative Wooden Serving Tray with Handles
For coffee in bed, or corralling whatever has colonised the ottoman. A handled wooden tray, handmade, in the size that actually gets used daily.
Trays are the most-used and least-gifted object in a living room: they turn a soft surface into a hard one and they make everything on them look deliberate. Handles matter more than looks here, because a tray without them cannot be carried with anything on it. Under fifty dollars from a Handmade storefront.

Wood is the fifth year, and it is the best-stocked year on the list
Wood is the fifth-year material on the traditional list, and the US and UK versions agree on it without qualification. It is also the material year this site can answer most thoroughly, because woodcraft is the deepest category here: boards, bowls, trays, platters and utensils, in named hardwoods, with real dimensions printed on the listings.
That depth is worth something specific at five years. A couple at this point usually has the basics and has started to notice which of them are bad — and the kitchen is where the bad ones are. A flexing plastic board, a warped supermarket spoon, no tray, no serving platter that is not also a dinner plate. A wooden object replaces a thing they already use rather than adding a thing they have to find space for.
Choose the wood before you choose the object
Species is the one specification on a wooden gift that actually predicts how it behaves, and the good listings state it. Here is what the names on this page mean.
- Teak
- Oily enough to resist water on its own, which is why it ends up on boats. The practical choice for anything that will get wet or sit out, and the reason it costs what it does.
- Black walnut
- Dark, dense and dimensionally stable. The default for large serving boards because it looks like the expensive option, which it is.
- Cherry and cherry burl
- Cherry darkens with light exposure over years, so the object changes color in the room it lives in. Burl is the disordered swirl at a knot — the most figured wood available and the hardest to turn without it coming apart.
- Maple and beech
- Pale, close-grained and hard. The working-surface woods: less dramatic, more knife-tolerant, cheaper for the same size.
If you want this taken further, cutting board wood types compares the species for real kitchen use, and end grain vs edge grain covers the construction question that matters more than species on a board you will cut on.
Engraving: where it goes, and where it must not
An anniversary wood gift is usually an engraved one, and there is exactly one rule that matters: keep the engraving out of the working surface. An engraved line in the middle of a cutting board gets knifed across within a month, and the cuts open the engraving into a crumb trap that cannot be cleaned properly. Engraving belongs in a border, on a handle, on the back, or on an object that is served from rather than cut on.
- Both names and the year. The anniversary convention that works, because the object commemorates something shared. Handmade anniversary gifts makes the same case against a single monogram.
- A border, not the center. Personalized cutting boards covers the knife-damage problem in detail.
- A tray or platter if you want the engraving to stay visible. Nothing is ever cut on a tray, so the lettering survives indefinitely.
- Allow two weeks. Engraving is done after the order and personalized wood is final sale almost everywhere. Check the spelling, and say yes to a proof if one is offered.
What the listings actually state
The gift that dies, and the ten-dollar thing that prevents it
A wooden object that is never oiled dries out, and a dry board or bowl cracks along its glue lines or its growth rings within a couple of years. That is the single most common way a hundred-dollar wooden gift fails, and it is entirely preventable: food-grade mineral oil, wiped on, two or three times a year. Never olive oil or any kitchen cooking oil, which go rancid in the grain.
Giving a bottle of conditioner alongside the object is the single highest-return thing you can add to a wood gift, and it costs under ten dollars. The method is in how to oil a cutting board, the comparison between the two common products is in board butter vs mineral oil, and bowls specifically — which behave differently from boards — are covered in wooden bowl care.
Budget, and the one place to spend more
Twenty to fifty dollars buys an engraved spoon, a small tray or a modest board. Fifty to a hundred and twenty is the heart of this category: good boards, carved bowls, engraved trays in named hardwood. Above that you are buying length and rarity — a forty-inch black walnut board or a one-off burl bowl, both of which are statement objects and should be treated as such.
The place worth spending more is size, not decoration. A board or tray that is too small gets used once and put away; the same money spent on a larger plain piece gets used weekly for a decade. What size cutting board has the measurements, and gifts under $100 frames the band if you would rather shop by budget.
