Beeswax has a high melting point and a dense structure and physically cannot carry much added fragrance. A candle that fills a room with vanilla and calls itself beeswax is almost always a blend — usually mostly soy or paraffin with some beeswax in it. That is a fine product, but it should say so. When the label leads with a strong scent and the word beeswax, assume blend and check the ingredient list.

What beeswax actually is, and why it burns differently
Beeswax is secreted by honeybees to build comb. It is harvested, filtered and melted, and depending on how much filtering it has had it ranges from deep golden yellow to near-white. That color range is a processing difference rather than a quality one — raw yellow wax simply has more of the original pollen and propolis left in it, which is also why it smells more strongly of honey.
Two properties follow from its structure. It has the highest melting point of the common candle waxes, which is why a beeswax candle burns longer than a soy or paraffin candle of the same size. And it is dense enough that it holds very little added fragrance, which is the single most important thing to know before buying one as a gift.
The fragrance problem, stated plainly
If someone wants a candle that makes a room smell of something, beeswax is the wrong material and no amount of maker skill changes that. What beeswax smells of is beeswax: a faint, warm, honeyish note that is noticeable up close and does not fill a room. People who love it love exactly that restraint.

Rolled versus poured
Two ways to make a beeswax candle, and they produce different objects. Rolled candles are made from a sheet of textured wax wound around a wick by hand — you can see the spiral on the outside, and the honeycomb texture is the sheet, not decoration. Poured candles are melted into a mold, so the surface is smooth.
Rolling is faster and needs no melting equipment, which is why hand-rolled tapers are the cheapest genuinely handmade candles on the market. Pouring produces a denser candle that burns marginally longer. Neither is better; the rolled one just looks more obviously made, which for a gift is usually the point.
What to expect when it burns
Beeswax tapers are softer than paraffin ones and will lean in a loose holder on a warm table — a holder that grips is worth the four dollars. Beeswax also self-extinguishes less reliably than paraffin, so a taper burned to the end needs watching.
