How long do handmade candles last?

Two different questions wear the same words — how many hours it burns, and how long it keeps in a cupboard. The first is answerable from the listing when the maker states it; the second depends almost entirely on where you put it.

Two questions, and they have different answers

When people ask how long a handmade candle lasts, they mean one of two things. Burn time is how many hours of flame are in the wax. Shelf life is how long an unlit candle stays worth lighting. They are unrelated problems with unrelated answers, and conflating them is why the question gets such unsatisfying replies.

Burn time is a property of the candle: wax volume, wick size, vessel shape. Shelf life is a property of where you keep it: heat, light and air do the damage, and a candle stored badly is ruined long before a candle stored well is old.

What burn time depends on

Four things decide it, and only two of them are usually on the listing.

Wax volume
The fuel. Stated as ounces on almost every jar candle, which makes it the most reliable number you can get. A 12 oz jar has half again as much fuel as an 8 oz tin.
Wick size and type
The rate at which the fuel is consumed. A thick or wooden wick burns faster than a thin cotton one in the same wax, which is the trade for the larger flame and the crackle.
Wax type
Soy and coconut blends melt at lower temperatures than paraffin and tend to burn slower and cooler. Beeswax has the highest melting point of the common waxes. Beeswax vs soy vs paraffin compares all three properly.
How it is burned
The one the buyer controls, and the one that actually ruins candles. A candle burned in short bursts tunnels, and a tunnelled candle strands most of its wax against the glass where no flame will ever reach it.

That last point is worth more than the other three combined. A tunnelled 9 oz candle can waste a third of its wax, which means burning a candle badly costs more hours than choosing a smaller one. Why candles tunnel has the fix and, more importantly, the first-burn rule that prevents it.

What the listings on this site actually state

Here is the honest state of the data. Most handmade candle listings do not print a burn time at all, because a small maker pouring in batches has no incentive to publish a number they would then have to defend. Where the figure is stated, it is stated plainly, and those are the candles you can plan around.

Lulu Candles wood wick jar9 oz, wooden wickNot stated
Arctic Wicks coconut-beeswax9 oz jarNot stated
Stoked Candle tin8 oz tinNot stated
Gorgeous Candles canning jar12 oz canning jarNot stated

Two things follow from that table. First, where a number exists it is usually in the 25 to 45 hour range for a jar candle in the 8 to 12 ounce band, and the 80-hour outlier is a different format entirely — a coiled candle that feeds through a stand rather than a poured vessel. Second, for every candle with no stated figure, the only honest proxy you have is the ounce count. Comparing a 12 oz jar against an 8 oz tin is a real comparison. Comparing either against a figure a listing never gave is not.

Shelf life, which is really a storage question

An unlit candle does not spoil the way food does. What changes is the fragrance, and what degrades it is the same three things that degrade most household goods: heat, direct light and air exposure. A jar candle kept lidded in a cool dark cupboard holds its scent far longer than the same candle kept on a sunny windowsill, and the difference is measured in years rather than weeks. For a couple who have just married rather than just moved in together, gifts for newlyweds is the companion page.

  • Keep the lid on. It is not packaging. The lid is what slows the fragrance oil evaporating out of the top layer of wax.
  • Cool and dark. A cupboard, not a windowsill and not above a radiator. Heat is the fastest way to lose scent from an unlit candle, and in a hot room soft waxes can slump.
  • Upright, always. Obvious for a jar, less obvious for tapers and pillars, which can bow permanently if stored leaning or flat in a warm place.
  • Expect pale color change. Light bleaches wax and some natural dyes shift. It is cosmetic, and it is not a sign the candle has gone off.

Beeswax is the outlier worth knowing about: it develops a pale white film, called bloom, on the surface over time. That is not mould, dust or a defect — it is the wax itself crystallising at the surface, it is generally taken as a sign of genuinely unprocessed beeswax, and it buffs off with a soft cloth. Beeswax candles covers it in more detail.

What to look for on the listing

Shopping for burn time specifically, there are four things worth checking before you buy, in order of how much they tell you.

  1. A stated hour figure. Rare, and it is the only hard number available. Where a maker prints one, believe it over any rule of thumb.
  2. The ounce count. Present on nearly every jar. The best proxy there is, and it makes two candles genuinely comparable.
  3. The wick type. A wooden wick is the main reason two candles with the same wax weight burn for different lengths of time. Wood wick candles explains the trade.
  4. The wax. Stated as soy, coconut blend, beeswax or simply wax. A listing that will not name the wax is also a listing that will not name the blend ratio.

A note on what we will not do: we are not going to publish an hours-per-ounce conversion and apply it to candles whose makers never stated one. That number varies with wick, vessel diameter and burn habits, and inventing it would make every unstated candle on this site look like it had been measured. Where a figure exists we print it. Where it does not, we say so.

Candle by the Hour 80-Hour Vertical Beeswax Candle

by Candle by the Hour

For the longest stated burn on the site, and you can see exactly how much is left. A coiled beeswax candle that feeds itself through a stand as it burns.

80 hour burnBeeswaxCotton wick

This is mass-produced and we are labeling it as such, because it is genuinely the more interesting object for a certain kind of recipient. The coil unwinds through a metal holder, so the flame stays at a constant height for the whole burn and you can see exactly how much is left. Eighty hours is a long time for a candle. It is the one gift here that people ask about.

Worth knowing first

Factory-made. Buy it for the mechanism, not because it is handmade, because it is not.

For a single handmade candle with the burn time actually printed on the listing. One handmade 8 oz candle with a 40-hour-plus stated burn, sold as the whole gift.

8 ozHandmade40+ hour stated burn

A single well-made candle presented on its own is a better gift than a multipack of small ones, and it is nearly always cheaper per hour of burn. The listing states over forty hours. Mistletoe here is a green, cool holiday scent rather than a spiced one, which is the harder version to find.

Lulu Candles Vanilla Spice Wood Wick Soy Jar Candle

For a 9 oz jar with no stated burn time, where the ounce count is the only number you get. The same jar and wick as its sibling above, in vanilla rather than wood.

9 ozWood wickSoy wax blendHand-poured in the USAFrosted glass jar, gold lid

Vanilla is about as broadly acceptable as a fragrance gets without disappearing entirely, and the listing pairs it with clove, amber and tobacco so it lands warm rather than sugary. Same 9 oz frosted jar, same natural wood wick, same soy-blend wax and US hand-pouring as the Santal above, at the same price. If you are buying for a colleague or an in-law and want the crackle without a scent gamble, this is the pick.

A soy blend rather than 100% soy, and the listing states no burn time — the ounce count is the only number you get.

Candle Care Kit: Trimmer, Snuffer and Wick Dipper

For the ten-dollar add-on that genuinely extends the life of every candle in the house. The three tools that fix most candle problems, for less than the candle costs.

Wick trimmerSnufferWick dipper

Almost every complaint about a candle traces to a wick left too long: soot on the glass, a smoking flame, a tunnel down the middle. A trimmer is a three-dollar fix for a thirty-dollar problem. Adding this to a candle turns a nice object into a thought-through gift, and it costs almost nothing to do.

Worth knowing first

Mass-produced hardware. It is a companion piece, never the gift on its own.

How to get more hours out of what you have

Three habits change the useful life of a candle more than the purchase decision does, and all three are free except the first.

  1. Trim the wick before every burn. An untrimmed wick mushrooms, smokes, and burns hotter and faster than it should. A trimmer costs about ten dollars once and pays for itself in wasted wax.
  2. Make the first burn long enough to melt the full surface. This is the single most important rule in candle ownership. The first burn sets the memory ring, and a candle that is first burned for half an hour will tunnel for the rest of its life.
  3. Do not burn it for more than about four hours at a stretch. Long burns overheat the vessel and the wick, which accelerates consumption and can discolor the glass.

If the candle is a gift, passing on the first-burn rule with it is worth doing. It is the difference between forty usable hours and twenty-five, and the recipient will otherwise learn it the expensive way. Candle gift sets covers giving candles well, and gifts for candle lovers covers buying for someone who already knows all of this.

Questions people actually ask

How long does a handmade candle burn?
Where listings state it, 25 to 45 hours is the usual range for a jar candle in the 8 to 12 ounce band. Most handmade listings do not state a figure, in which case the ounce count is the only honest basis for comparison.
Do unlit candles expire?
They do not spoil, but the fragrance weakens over time. Heat, direct light and air exposure are what cause it, so a lidded candle in a cool dark cupboard keeps far longer than one on a windowsill.
How should I store candles?
Lid on, upright, cool and dark. Keep them off windowsills and away from radiators, and store tapers and pillars standing rather than leaning so they do not bow.
Why does my beeswax candle have a white film on it?
That is bloom — the wax crystallising at the surface. It is usually taken as evidence of genuinely unprocessed beeswax, it is not mould, and it buffs off with a soft cloth.
What is the fastest way to waste a candle?
Burning it in short bursts. A tunnelled candle strands wax against the glass where no flame reaches it, which can cost a third of the jar. A long enough first burn prevents it.
Does a wood wick burn faster than cotton?
Generally yes, in the same wax — the larger flame is the trade for the crackle. It is the main reason two candles with identical wax weights can burn for noticeably different lengths of time.
