Backstrap and foot-loom weaving is one of the few crafts where the handmade version is visibly different from the machine version rather than just better made: the stripe widths drift, the selvedge is not perfectly straight, and the whole thing reads as made rather than printed. Altiplano works with Guatemalan weaving cooperatives, so the maker chain is stated rather than implied. Use it as a throw or a yoga blanket; it is too thin for a bed.

Cherry is the one common board wood that visibly changes: it starts pale pinkish and darkens under light into a red-brown, so the board looks different at year five than at week one. That is a genuine feature for a gift, because it makes the object a record of the time it has been owned. Cherry is softer than maple, so treat it as a serving and light-prep board rather than a butcher block.

Hickory is harder than maple and considerably harder than walnut, which makes it a more demanding wood to work and a more durable board to own. This is the top of the price range here and it is honest about why: the material is difficult and the construction is the expensive one. Buy it as a milestone gift, not a housewarming afterthought.

The gap between a fifty-dollar gift and a hundred-dollar gift is hard to fill with anything anyone wants. A large lazy susan fills it: it is expensive enough to be a group gift, and it comes out on the table every time the house has guests, which is exactly when the givers are likely to be present.
