Tray, board, or handled board?

Three different objects that get sold as one category. A tray has a raised lip and exists to carry things that could slide — cups, glasses, a teapot. A serving board is flat and exists to present food. A handled board is a serving board with somewhere to put your thumbs, which sounds trivial and is the single most useful feature in the category.

Buy the tray if the recipient carries drinks — to a sofa, a bed, a garden. Buy the flat board if food goes on it and stays put. Buy the handled board if you want one object that does both, which for most households is the right answer.

What the handle actually changes

Two things. First, you can pick up a full board with one hand on each end and no fingers under the food, which is the difference between carrying a loaded board confidently and shuffling it across a counter. Second, a handled board hangs, which means it lives on a wall or a hook rather than in a cupboard — and a board that is visible gets used, while a board in a cupboard does not.

That second point is worth more than it sounds. The most common failure of a handmade board as a gift is not that it breaks; it is that it goes in a drawer and never comes out.

The centerpiece tray, which people underestimate

A long, shallow wooden tray down the middle of a dining table is one of the cheapest ways to make a room look finished. It gathers candles, a small plant and salt and pepper into one deliberate object instead of four stray ones, and it solves the specific problem of a large table that looks empty when nobody is eating at it.

Teak, and why it turns up in trays

Teak has a high natural oil content, which makes it unusually resistant to water without needing much finishing. That is why it is used on boats and outdoor furniture, and it is why it works well for a tray that will regularly have condensation and spilled drinks on it. It is also stable enough not to warp when one side gets wet and the other does not.

The trade is cost and color — teak is expensive and its warm mid-brown is not to everyone's taste. For an indoor tray that never sees standing water, oiled maple or walnut is entirely sufficient and considerably cheaper.

Size, and the mistake

For a drinks tray, measure two mugs side by side plus a hand's width — around 16 x 12 inches is the practical minimum, and anything smaller becomes a coaster with ambition. For a serving board, see the sizing table on charcuterie boards, which is the same problem in a different shape.

For a centerpiece, measure the table and take about half its length. A tray that is too short reads as a leftover object; one that runs most of the table reads as intentional.
