The one we would not buy

Knives, gadgets and anything a serious cook has already chosen

Somebody who cooks properly has opinions about their knives, and those opinions took research. A knife you chose for them is a knife they now have to be polite about, and it is one of the few gifts genuinely difficult to give away. The same goes for any single-purpose gadget — a cook has already decided whether they want an avocado tool.

The picks, in full

01
Colorado End Grain Cutting Board
Amazon HandmadeBest overall

Colorado End Grain Cutting Board

by Independent maker

For a cook who sharpens their own knives. A true end grain block from a Handmade storefront, at the price where end grain starts.

End grain constructionHardwood

End grain means the wood fibers stand vertically, so the knife edge slots between them instead of scraping across them. Two things follow: the board is kinder to your knives, and the cut marks close up rather than staying as scars. It is also heavier and more expensive to make, which is why edge grain dominates the shelves. This is the entry point to the real thing.

Worth knowing first

End grain boards are thick and heavy by design. If they wash up in a small sink, measure first.

Amazon HandmadeBest missing piece

Embossed Relief Serving Bowl, 10 in

For the bowl most kitchens do not have. A ten-inch handmade bowl with a raised relief surface, at under thirty dollars.

10 inEmbossed reliefHandmade ceramic

Ten inches is the useful serving size: big enough for a salad for four, small enough to fit in a cupboard. The relief surface catches light on the rim, which is what stops a plain bowl looking like a plain bowl. This is the best-value ceramic on the page.

Highlight Series Large Board with Handle, Walnut, Maple and Padauk
Amazon HandmadeBest handled board

Highlight Series Large Board with Handle, Walnut, Maple and Padauk

by Independent maker

For chopping and carrying from the same object. Large, handled, and padauk gives it an orange-red stripe you cannot get from stain.

LargeHandleWalnut, maple, padauk

Padauk is bright orange when freshly cut and mellows to a deep red-brown, so this board changes character over its first year in the same way cherry does. Large format with a handle is the entertaining configuration: it carries a full cheese course. It is a lot of board, so check they have somewhere to put it.

JABIHOME Wooden Spoons and Forks, Set of 4

by JABIHOME

For a drawer of melted plastic spatulas. Four wooden serving pieces, which is the least glamorous useful gift on this site.

Set of 4Spoons and forksWood

Wooden utensils do not scratch a pan, do not melt, and do not conduct heat into your hand. Most kitchens have one, warped, from a supermarket. A set of four is the kind of gift that gets used every day and never gets photographed. Under twenty-five dollars.

Amazon HandmadeBest small set

Earthen Vessels Hydrangea Leaf Dish Set, 5 Pieces

by Earthen Vessels Pottery

For mise en place, and anything in brine. Five stoneware dishes pressed from real hydrangea leaves, so the veins are the mold.

Set of 5StonewareLeaf-pressed

Leaf-pressed pottery is made by laying an actual leaf on the clay and pressing it, which means the vein pattern on the finished dish is a record of a specific leaf. It is one of the few decorative techniques where the process is visible in the result. Five pieces makes it a set rather than a trinket.

Clarks Cutting Board Oil and Wax Kit
Factory-madeBest add-on

Clarks Cutting Board Oil and Wax Kit

by Clarks

For giving with any wooden gift. Food-grade mineral oil, finishing wax, an applicator and a cloth, in one box.

12 oz mineral oil6 oz finishing waxApplicatorBuffing cloth

A wooden board that is never oiled will dry out, and a dry board cracks along its glue lines within a couple of years. That is the single most common way a hundred-dollar gift dies. The kit includes both the oil that soaks in and the wax that seals the surface, which is the two-step the manufacturers actually recommend.

Worth knowing first

Mass-produced hardware. It is the companion to a board, never the gift itself.

Handmade Stoneware Soup Mug, 12 oz
Amazon HandmadeBest dual purpose

Handmade Stoneware Soup Mug, 12 oz

For soup and coffee from the same object. A handled 12 oz chili bowl, which is a better object than it sounds.

12 ozHandled bowlHandmade stoneware

A handled bowl is the most useful vessel in a kitchen and almost nobody owns one: it holds soup, chili, cereal or a large coffee, and the handle means you can carry it hot without a tray. Handmade stoneware, twelve ounces. This is the gift that quietly becomes the thing they use every day.

Amazon HandmadeBest serving piece

Maple Leaf Sectional Serving Platter

For someone who feeds people. A shaped, sectioned wooden platter that keeps the olives out of the cheese.

SectionalHandmadeServing platter

Flat boards look good in photographs and behave badly with anything wet. Sections solve the real problem: a divided platter keeps the marinated things away from the crackers for the length of an evening. Shaped as a leaf, which is either the appeal or the objection depending on the recipient.

Buy adjacent, not central

The rule for any enthusiast: they have already bought the obvious thing, after research, to their own specification. What they have not bought is the thing next to it — the object they use alongside their good equipment and have never upgraded because it was never the point.

For a cook, the central items are knives, pans and appliances. The adjacent items are boards, bowls, spoons, serving pieces and small dishes, and that is where every recommendation on this page sits.

The board is the single best gift here

Because it is the most-used surface in any kitchen and the one most people are still making do with. If the cook sharpens their own knives, buy end grain — the blade parts vertical fibers rather than cutting across them, which measurably extends the interval between sharpenings and they will notice.

If they own a supermarket knife block, buy a thick edge-grain board instead and spend the difference elsewhere. The effect is real and irrelevant to them.

Whichever you buy, add a bottle of conditioner. Fifteen dollars, and it is the difference between the board being in use in five years and being in a cupboard.

The piece most kitchens are missing

A large shallow serving bowl, nine to eleven inches. Most households own mixing bowls and cereal bowls; neither looks right coming to a table. It handles salad, pasta, sides, and fruit on a counter when it is not in use, and it is the piece a cook is most likely to notice they lack the moment they have one.

Small dishes, which nobody thinks of

A set of three or five small ceramic dishes solves two real problems: mise en place, where a cook currently uses whatever bowls are to hand, and anything in brine at the table, which otherwise bleeds across a board.

They also work as spoon rests, ring dishes and salt cellars, which is why they end up being the pieces used daily. Under thirty dollars for a set, and among the highest-yield gifts on this page.

Wooden spoons: the one that matters

Not the stirring spoon — the flat-edged one. The flat edge scrapes fond off the bottom of a pan, which is the job a rounded spoon does badly and the reason cooks reach for it constantly. If a set includes one, that is the piece that wears out first.

Avoid painted or dyed utensils entirely. Anything applied to the surface of a spoon is going into hot food, and reputable makers finish with food-grade oil and nothing else.

Questions people actually ask

Should I buy a knife for someone who cooks?
No. A serious cook has already chosen their knives after research, and a knife you chose is one they have to be polite about. Buy the board it sits on instead.
End grain or edge grain for a keen cook?
End grain if they sharpen their own knives — the difference is measurable and they will notice. Edge grain if they own a supermarket knife block, and spend the difference elsewhere.
What kitchen piece do most cooks lack?
A nine to eleven inch shallow serving bowl, and a set of small dishes for mise en place. Both get used constantly once they exist.
