The one we would not buy
Full matching dinner services in handmade pottery
Two problems. It is enormously expensive — twelve wheel-thrown plates is weeks of a potter's life — and it defeats the point, because the appeal of handmade tableware is variation and a matching set suppresses it. It also creates a replacement trap: break one plate in three years and the glaze batch no longer exists. Buy serving pieces and accents in pottery and keep the plates production.
The picks, in full

Embossed Relief Serving Bowl, 10 in
For one bowl that upgrades a whole table. A ten-inch handmade bowl with a raised relief surface, at under thirty dollars.
Ten inches is the useful serving size: big enough for a salad for four, small enough to fit in a cupboard. The relief surface catches light on the rim, which is what stops a plain bowl looking like a plain bowl. This is the best-value ceramic on the page.

Earthen Vessels Hydrangea Leaf Dish Set, 5 Pieces
by Earthen Vessels Pottery
For olives, dips and everything in brine. Five stoneware dishes pressed from real hydrangea leaves, so the veins are the mold.
Leaf-pressed pottery is made by laying an actual leaf on the clay and pressing it, which means the vein pattern on the finished dish is a record of a specific leaf. It is one of the few decorative techniques where the process is visible in the result. Five pieces makes it a set rather than a trinket.

Ceramiche d Arte Parrini Italian Serving Set, Olives Pattern
by Ceramiche d Arte Parrini
For someone who entertains properly. Hand-painted Tuscan majolica, made and painted in Italy, at Italian prices.
Majolica is tin-glazed earthenware painted by hand before the second firing, and the tradition it comes from is several hundred years old. This is not a farmhouse-style print: the brushwork is done by a person and the variation between pieces proves it. It is the most expensive ceramic on the site and the one that most clearly is not from a factory.
Worth knowing first
Earthenware, hand-painted. Treat it as handwash-only unless the maker says otherwise.

Lennymud Chopstick Ramen Bowl
by Lennymud by Lorrie Veasey
For a ramen or noodle habit. A ramen bowl with a chopstick rest built into the rim, from a named maker.
The chopstick notch is a small piece of thinking that changes how the bowl is used: the sticks stay out of the broth and off the table. Made by an identifiable potter rather than anonymously, which is the second thing we look for after the marketplace itself. Under twenty-five dollars.

Ceramiche d Arte Parrini Dinnerware Set, Grape Pattern
by Ceramiche d Arte Parrini
For a dresser or a dining room, as much as a table. A hand-painted Italian dinnerware set, and the price is a group-gift price.
There is a category of wedding gift that only works when four people go in together, and this is it: hand-painted Italian pottery that nobody buys for themselves and everybody keeps. Painted by hand in Tuscany. If the couple already has plates, this is the set that comes out when they have people over.

Handmade Breakfast and Dipping Set, Turquoise
For a first piece of handmade tableware. A handmade multi-bowl serving set in turquoise, built for small dishes at once.
Serving several small things is a completely different problem from serving one big one, and most kitchens have no equipment for it. A dedicated dipping set solves it and looks intentional doing so. Handmade, colorful, and priced around a hundred dollars, which puts it in serious-gift territory.

Handmade Red Heart Pottery Bowl
For a wedding or an anniversary. A decorative handmade bowl with a heart form, at a price that reads as considered.
Most romantic gifts are seasonal and get put away. A ceramic bowl does not: it holds keys or rings and stays on a dresser. The heart is the reason for buying it and not the only thing about it, which is the test any romantic object has to pass.

Earthen Vessels Thimble Berry Leaf Spoon Rest Set, 5 Pieces
by Earthen Vessels Pottery
For a stovetop or a coffee station. Five leaf-pressed spoon rests in mixed earth tones, from the same pottery.
A spoon rest is the object people do not buy for themselves and use constantly once they have one. Five of them in mixed glazes means the set works spread across a kitchen rather than stacked in a cupboard. Same leaf-pressing technique as the dish set above.

The approach that actually works
Almost nobody should buy a full handmade dinner service, and the people who tell you otherwise are not doing the arithmetic. Twelve wheel-thrown plates represents weeks of a potter's time and lands somewhere north of a thousand dollars — for objects that will be stacked, scraped and eventually broken.
The approach that works is production plates, handmade everything else. Keep plain white or cream plates as the base layer, and put the money into the pieces that get looked at: a serving bowl, a set of small dishes, a platter. Those are the objects that come to the table as objects rather than as surfaces, and one good one changes how a whole table reads.
The single most useful piece to own
A large shallow serving bowl, somewhere between nine and eleven inches. It holds a salad, a pasta, a side, or fruit on a counter when it is not in use. It is the piece with the widest range of jobs and the one most households do not have, because the bowls people own are either mixing bowls or cereal bowls and neither looks right on a table.
Second most useful: a set of small dishes. Anything in brine — olives, cornichons, capers — bleeds across a board and turns everything soggy, and three small dishes solve a problem that no amount of arranging does. They also work as ring dishes, spoon rests and salt cellars, which is why they are the piece that gets used daily.
Stoneware, earthenware, and what it means for the table
Most functional handmade tableware is stoneware: fired hot, dense, non-porous and chip-resistant enough for real use. Earthenware is fired cooler and is more porous and more fragile, which is why it turns up more in decorative pieces than in plates. The Italian majolica-style pieces on this page are earthenware in the traditional sense, and they are best understood as decorative-functional rather than everyday.
The practical consequence: a stoneware serving bowl can live in a cupboard and take knocks. A hand-painted earthenware platter wants to be stored carefully and is worth taking out for the occasion rather than the Tuesday.
Oven, microwave and dishwasher
Stoneware generally handles all three, with the same two glaze exceptions as mugs: no metallic lustre in a microwave, and crazed glazes should stay out of the dishwasher. The additional rule for dinnerware is thermal shock — do not take a cold stoneware dish from the refrigerator into a hot oven. Pottery cracks from sudden temperature change more readily than from heat itself.
Hand-painted decorative pieces are a separate case. Unless a listing explicitly says food-safe, treat a decorated platter as a serving surface for dry food rather than as ovenware. Handmade pottery care covers how to work out which you have.
Buying it as a gift
A single serving bowl is a genuinely good wedding or housewarming gift, and it is a much better one than a mug because it does not need to match anything. It goes into any kitchen, it is used rather than displayed, and it is a piece almost nobody buys for themselves.
Pair it with a wooden board and you have a table set — warm wood and cool glazed clay is the pairing that makes a table look considered, and it is a better hundred-dollar gift than either object at twice the price.
