Grade first, everything else second

The order, best to worst, is full grain, top grain, genuine leather, bonded leather. Full grain keeps the outer surface of the hide intact, including its scars and pores, which is why it looks less uniform and why it develops a patina. Top grain has had that surface sanded off and a finish applied, so it stays looking new and then simply looks worn. Genuine leather is the split beneath. Bonded is shredded scrap glued to a backing.

For a wallet specifically this matters more than for almost any other leather object, because a wallet lives in a pocket, absorbs body heat and oil, flexes several times a day, and is expected to last a decade. Slim or bifold — and the honest answer

Slim card wallets are the fashionable answer and they are a lifestyle change disguised as a gift. They hold four to six cards and folded notes, and a great many people quietly hate them because they carry a transit card, a gym card, a receipt they mean to keep and forty dollars in fives.

The rule we would apply: buy the slim wallet only if you have seen the recipient's current wallet and it is already nearly empty. Otherwise buy the bifold, which is the shape they already use, made from better material. A gift that requires the recipient to change a habit is a gift with a low hit rate.

Stitching, and why it matters here

Saddle stitching — a hand technique using two needles and one thread, passing through each hole from both sides — produces a seam where a single broken stitch does not unravel the row. Machine lock-stitching does the opposite: cut one stitch and the seam runs. On something flexed daily in a pocket, that difference is the whole reason hand-stitched wallets are worth their premium.

The other construction detail worth looking for is fewer pieces. A wallet folded from one heavy piece of leather with minimal stitching has almost nothing to come apart, which is why the best slim wallets are built that way rather than assembled from several thin panels.

What to expect in the first month

A new full-grain wallet is stiff, dark and slightly unwelcoming. Cards go in tightly, the fold does not sit flat, and it looks like a worse object than the sanded and finished top-grain wallet next to it. That lasts about four weeks with daily use, and then it starts becoming the thing it is going to be.

This is worth telling the recipient, because otherwise a good gift gets shelved in week two. If you are giving one, say: it gets better, give it a month, do not condition it yet.

Personalization

Small is right. A stamped initial in a corner reads as a maker's mark and sinks into the leather over time; a full name across the front reads as a novelty and never stops. It also removes returns on most listings, and it is applied by machine after the wallet is finished, so a typo is permanent.

If the wallet is a milestone gift — a graduation, a twenty-first — a discreet monogram is a good call. If it is simply a better wallet, leave it plain.

Care

Less than people think. Conditioning two or three times a year is plenty, and over-conditioning is a real failure mode: it softens the fibers and the wallet loses its shape and starts to sag open.
