Leather grades explained

What a hide is, in one paragraph

An animal hide is layered. The outer surface — the part that faced the world — has the tightest, strongest fiber structure, along with the pores, scars and marks the animal accumulated. Beneath it the fibers get looser and more open the deeper you go. A tannery can split a hide horizontally into layers, and which layer you get is what the grade names describe.

The four grades

Full grain

The complete outer surface, unsanded and uncorrected. Strongest, most durable, and the only grade that develops a patina — because the surface is unsealed, so oils and light change it over years. It looks less uniform because the marks are still there, and that is the point.

Top grain

The outer layer with the surface sanded off and a finish applied to hide imperfections. More uniform, more stain-resistant, cheaper. It does not patina; it stays looking new and then looks worn. Genuinely fine for many objects.

Genuine leather

The layers beneath the top grain, after the outer surface has been split away. Real leather, and the third-best of four grades. The name is a marketing artefact, not a quality claim — this is the single most misleading term in the category.

Bonded leather

Leather scrap shredded, mixed with adhesive, bonded to a backing and embossed with a fake grain pattern. Typically 10-20% leather by content. It peels. Avoid it for anything that flexes.

Why genuine leather is the trap

Because the word means the opposite of what a buyer hears. To a consumer, genuine leather sounds like a guarantee — this is real leather, not fake. To the trade it identifies a specific, lower grade. Both readings are technically correct, and listings lean on that gap constantly.

The practical rule that follows: a maker using full grain says full grain, because it is the most valuable thing they can put in a title. Silence about grade is not an oversight, and on a wallet or a belt it usually means the answer is not one you would pay extra for.

Which grade matters on which object

Vegetable tanned or chrome tanned

A separate axis from grade, and worth knowing. Vegetable tanning uses tree-bark tannins, takes weeks, and produces leather that darkens and develops character — it also has a distinctive warm smell people either love or find overwhelming in a small room. Chrome tanning takes about a day, produces softer and more color-stable leather, and smells faintly chemical.

Neither is better in general. Veg-tan is what you want for an object meant to age; chrome-tan is what you want for a soft bag in a color that should stay that color. Where a listing says which, that is a small signal that the seller knows their material.

How to check without the listing

Three things visible in a good photograph. Pores and marks on the surface — full grain keeps them, top grain has had them sanded away, so an unnaturally perfect surface is corrected leather. The cut edge, if shown: full grain is uniform through its thickness, bonded leather shows a fabric backing. And the reverse, which on full grain is a fibrous suede-like surface rather than a smooth coating.

None of these is conclusive from a photo alone, and together with a stated grade they usually settle it. Handmade leather goods applies this to each category.
