Belts sold by trouser waist size
Belt sizing is measured from the buckle fold to the hole in use, not around a waist, and it is typically two inches larger than trouser size — but that gap varies with build and with where someone wears their trousers. A belt sized off a trouser label is a coin flip, and on a made-to-order belt it is a coin flip you cannot return. Measure an existing belt instead. It takes thirty seconds and it removes the entire risk.

How to size a belt without asking
Take a belt the person already wears. Measure from the fold at the buckle end — not the tip of the buckle — to the hole they actually use. That measurement, in inches, is the belt size to order. Nothing else in the process matters as much as this, and it is the reason belts get returned.
If you cannot get hold of one of their belts, do not guess from trouser size. Buy a wallet or a valet tray instead — both are excellent leather gifts with no fit risk at all.
Why cheap belts curl
Almost every belt under twenty dollars is made from bonded leather: shredded scrap bonded to a fabric backing, or two thin layers of split leather glued together and stitched around the edge. Under the daily cycle of bending, tensioning and body heat, the layers separate. The belt curls along its length, the edges fray, and the whole thing looks tired within a year.
A belt cut from a single piece of full-grain hide has no layers to separate. It is one strip of leather with holes punched in it and a buckle attached, which is why it is both more expensive and effectively unable to fail the way the cheap one does. That is the entire argument for a handmade belt, and it is a good one.
Width, which is a real decision
The buckle is the part that dates a belt
Almost every belt buckle on the market is plated zinc alloy. It looks correct when new and, at the wear points where the belt tongue rubs, the plating eventually flakes off and exposes gray metal underneath. That is what makes a five-year-old belt look old even when the leather is fine.
Solid brass does not do that. It has weight in the hand, it wears to a duller version of itself rather than exposing a different metal, and it can be polished back. It is the single upgrade that most affects how a belt looks in year five, and it is the reason the brass-buckle belt on this page is here despite its ornate styling.
Made to order, and the lead time
Most belts here are cut and finished after you order, because a workshop cannot hold stock in every length. That means one to three weeks in ordinary months and longer in December, and it usually means no returns — a belt cut to 36 inches cannot be sold to anyone else.
Which brings the sizing point back around: measure the existing belt. On a made-to-order item, the measurement is the entire purchase decision.
Care
Belts need less care than any other leather item because body heat and skin oils condition them continuously. Wipe salt marks off after a hot day, hang it rather than coiling it in a drawer, and condition it once a year at most. The most common belt-care error is over-conditioning, which softens the leather until it stretches and the hole spacing goes wrong. Leather care covers it.
