Two variables, and everything else is marketing

A candle is wax and a wick. The wax decides how it burns, how long it lasts, and how much fragrance it can hold. The wick decides whether it burns evenly or drills a hole down the middle. Color, jar, label and name decide nothing at all, which is unfortunate, because they are what most listings talk about.

The single most useful thing to know is that beeswax barely holds fragrance. Beeswax has a high melting point and a dense structure, and it cannot carry much added scent — which is why almost every strongly scented candle you have ever bought was soy or paraffin, and why a heavily fragranced candle described as beeswax is almost always a blend. Which wax for which person

Beeswax

Burns longest, smells faintly of honey on its own, holds almost no added fragrance. Buy it for someone who dislikes scented candles or reads ingredient lists. Start at beeswax candles.

Soy

The default for scented candles: holds fragrance well, burns cooler and slower than paraffin, made from a renewable crop. Start at soy candles.

Coconut blends

The compromise. Carries scent better than beeswax while keeping the base nameable. Common on small-maker listings and usually honest about being a blend.

Paraffin

Cheapest, strongest scent throw, petroleum-derived. We list very few, not on ideological grounds but because it is rarely what someone is looking for when they search for handmade.

The wick question, which nobody asks and everybody should

A wick that is too small for the diameter of the jar will tunnel: it melts a narrow well down the center and leaves a wall of unused wax, and once that has happened on the first burn it will happen every time. This is the most common way a good candle becomes a disappointing one, and it is almost entirely fixable by burning it long enough the first time. Why candles tunnel covers it in one page.

Wood wicks are the other option and they behave differently: they crackle, they burn wider and shallower, and they need trimming more aggressively than cotton. The honest warning about candle gifts

Scent is the most personal thing on this site and the least visible in a photograph. You are buying something the recipient will smell for forty hours in a room they cannot leave, based on a word like amber. If you have not smelled it and they have not asked for it, the risk is real.

Two ways round it. Buy unscented — beeswax tapers and pillars are genuinely beautiful objects and carry no scent risk at all. Or buy a gift set with several small scents rather than one large one, which turns a single bet into four small ones. And if the household has cats, a toddler or a landlord who bans open flames, buy a reed diffuser instead.
