Hand-rolled beeswax is the cheapest way to put a genuinely handmade object on a table, and it is one of the few gifts under twenty dollars that does not feel like a token. There is no fragrance oil in it. What you smell is the wax, which is why beeswax candles smell faintly of honey and paraffin candles smell of whatever was added to them. A pair burns through a long dinner with room to spare.

Tapers need a holder that grips. Beeswax is softer than paraffin and will lean in a loose socket on a warm table.

Arctic Wicks Vanilla Bourbon Coconut-Beeswax Candle

Pure beeswax barely holds fragrance, which is why almost every scented candle is soy or paraffin. A coconut-beeswax blend is the compromise: it carries scent better than straight beeswax while keeping the wax itself something you can name. Vanilla and bourbon is about as safe as a scent gift gets without being boring.

This is a blend, not 100% beeswax. If the person you are buying for specifically wants pure beeswax, buy the tapers instead.

The three waxes
- Beeswax
- Secreted by honeybees to build comb, then harvested and filtered. Highest melting point of the three, so it burns longest. Dense structure, so it holds very little added fragrance. Naturally smells faintly of honey.
- Soy
- Hydrogenated soybean oil. Lower melting point, so it burns cooler and slower than paraffin. Softer structure holds fragrance oil well. Washes out of a jar with hot soapy water.
- Paraffin
- A petroleum by-product, refined from crude oil. Cheapest, holds and throws the most fragrance, and sets to a smooth glassy surface. The default for mass-market candles.
The comparison
The single most useful fact
Beeswax barely holds fragrance. Its high melting point and dense structure mean it cannot carry much added scent, which is why almost every strongly scented candle you have ever bought was soy or paraffin — and why a heavily fragranced candle sold as beeswax is almost always a blend.
If someone wants a candle that makes a room smell of something, beeswax is the wrong material and no maker skill changes that. If they want a candle that smells of nothing much and burns for a very long time, it is exactly right. That is the whole decision.
The claims we could not verify
Two are repeated constantly in this category and we are not going to repeat them, because we could not find reliable evidence when we looked.
That beeswax candles purify the air by releasing negative ions. This appears on a large share of beeswax listings and we could not locate credible research supporting it. What is fair to say is that beeswax burns cleanly with little soot when the wick is properly trimmed, which is a real and modest benefit.
That paraffin candles release dangerous toxins in normal use. This is asserted widely in marketing for the other two waxes. The research we could find is contested and the strong version of the claim is not well supported. We do not list many paraffin candles, but that is because they are rarely what someone searching for handmade wants — not because we are making a health claim we cannot support.
Blends, and why they are common
Coconut-beeswax and coconut-soy blends are increasingly the default among small makers, and for a sound reason: they carry scent better than beeswax while keeping the base something you can name, and they burn cooler than paraffin. A blend is not a compromise being hidden — it is usually the right technical answer.
The thing to look for is whether the listing says it is a blend. A maker proud of their wax states it. A listing that says only luxury blend with no components named is the one to be skeptical of.
What actually affects your experience most
Not the wax — the wick, and the first burn. A wick too small for the jar diameter tunnels regardless of what the wax is, and once a candle has tunneled on its first burn it will follow that channel for the rest of its life. That single factor affects how much of a candle you actually get more than any wax choice does.
