Handmade anniversary gifts
The traditional material list is genuinely useful here, provided you treat it as a prompt rather than an instruction.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the order of the picks, and we say so when the cheaper thing is the better buy. How this works.
Every pick below is on Amazon Handmade unless the card says otherwise, and every price is the live one. If you want the rules we apply before anything gets listed, they are on how we pick.

The one we would not buy
Literal interpretations of the traditional material list
Paper for the first year does not mean a sheet of paper, and cotton for the second does not mean a t-shirt. The list is a prompt for a category, and taking it literally produces gifts that are clever rather than good. The failure is easy to spot in advance: if the gift is only interesting because it satisfies the rule, it is not a gift, it is a puzzle answer.
The picks, in full

Kantha Patchwork Silk Sari Quilt
For a second anniversary, or any year at all. Old sari silk running-stitched together by hand, reversible, and no two alike.
Kantha is a genuine repair tradition rather than a style: layers of worn sari cloth stitched together with a running stitch to make something new. That means every piece is materially unique, and the listing photograph is representative rather than exact. It is reversible, which effectively makes it two throws. If someone in your life dislikes matching furniture, this is their gift.
Worth knowing first
You will not receive the exact piece in the photo. That is inherent to the craft, and it is worth knowing before you order rather than after.

Sterling Silver Black Onyx Drop Earrings
For a milestone year that needs something dressy. Oval black onyx set in sterling — the dressiest pair here, at sixty dollars.
Onyx is genuinely black rather than very dark gray, which is what makes it work against black clothing where most dark stones disappear. Bezel-set in sterling rather than prong-set, so nothing snags. This is the pair for a milestone birthday or an anniversary, where a small pair of studs would read as too casual.

Engraved Teak Tray with Handles
For two names, on something used weekly. Teak, handled, and engraved with names and the established year.
Teak is the outlier among serving woods: it is oily enough to shrug off water, which is why it ends up on boats and in bathrooms. That makes an engraved teak tray unusually practical for something bought as a keepsake. This is the top end of the tray category and it earns the price on material.

Custom Engraved Walnut Board, 9 x 12 in with Groove
by Independent maker
For wood, done properly rather than literally. Solid walnut with a juice groove, engraved to order, at around fifty dollars.
A juice groove is the detail that separates a carving board from a chopping board: it catches what comes out of a roast instead of sending it across the counter. Add walnut rather than a pale budget hardwood and you have a personalized gift that stands up on its own terms. This is the version to buy if the engraved boards above feel too thin.

Little Bee of Connecticut Hand-Rolled Beeswax Tapers
by Little Bee of Connecticut
For a dinner at home, which is what most anniversaries are. Rolled from sheet wax by a Connecticut maker, so the honey smell is the wax itself.
Hand-rolled beeswax is the cheapest way to put a genuinely handmade object on a table, and it is one of the few gifts under twenty dollars that does not feel like a token. There is no fragrance oil in it. What you smell is the wax, which is why beeswax candles smell faintly of honey and paraffin candles smell of whatever was added to them. A pair burns through a long dinner with room to spare.
Worth knowing first
Tapers need a holder that grips. Beeswax is softer than paraffin and will lean in a loose socket on a warm table.

EcoSeaCo Sea Glass Dangle Earrings
by EcoSeaCo
For a couple with a coast in their history. Real beach-found glass on sterling, which is why the color is never quite repeatable.
Sea glass cannot be manufactured to order — it is broken glass tumbled by water for decades — so the supply is genuinely found rather than made, and the shades vary accordingly. That gives the gift a story that does not need embellishing. Set on sterling rather than plated wire, so it survives daily wear.

Tommy Lion Alpaca Wool Blanket, Queen
by Tommy Lion
For a significant year, and a bed. Alpaca at bed size — warmer than wool for the weight, and it does not itch.
Alpaca fiber is hollow, which is why it insulates better than sheep's wool at a lower weight, and it has no lanolin, which is why people who react to wool usually do not react to it. At 90 x 80 inches this is a real bed blanket rather than a throw, and that size is what makes it a serious gift. It is the most expensive fiber item on the site and the one most likely to still be in use in twenty years.
Worth knowing first
Hand wash or dry clean. Putting alpaca through a hot machine cycle is how a two-hundred-dollar blanket becomes a doll's blanket.

Handmade Red Heart Pottery Bowl
For pottery, without being obvious about it. A decorative handmade bowl with a heart form, at a price that reads as considered.
Most romantic gifts are seasonal and get put away. A ceramic bowl does not: it holds keys or rings and stays on a dresser. The heart is the reason for buying it and not the only thing about it, which is the test any romantic object has to pass.

The material list, used properly
The traditional anniversary materials are one of the few gift conventions that genuinely help, because they solve the blank-page problem: instead of anything, you are choosing within a category. That is a real narrowing.
Note how well this maps onto handmade specifically. Cotton, leather, wood, pottery and silver are five of the six crafts on this site, which is not a coincidence — the list was written when those were the materials things were made from.
Where it goes wrong
Taking it literally. Paper does not mean a sheet of paper and cotton does not mean a t-shirt. The list is pointing at a material category, and the test for whether you have used it well is simple: would the gift be good even if the rule did not exist? If the only interesting thing about it is that it satisfies the year, it is a puzzle answer rather than a gift.
Two names, not one
The personalization convention that works for an anniversary is different from a birthday or a retirement. Both names, or the wedding date, rather than one person's initials — because the object is commemorating a shared thing.
An engraved tray with two names on it goes into a shared space and belongs to both people, which is the correct register. A single monogram makes it one person's object.
Most anniversaries are a dinner at home
Which makes the table the right place to spend. A pair of beeswax tapers, a long tray, a serving bowl — these are gifts that improve the evening they are given on and then keep working.
It is also a considerably better use of forty dollars than a token object, because it turns the gift into part of the occasion rather than an accessory to it.
Milestone years
Twenty-fifth, fortieth, fiftieth — treat these like a wedding. The object stands in for the occasion, so it wants to be singular and it wants a date on it. A queen-size quilt or a full alpaca blanket is the right scale, and both are objects a household keeps for decades.
