The honest note about this category

We searched Amazon's Handmade marketplace directly for hand-knitted blankets while building this site, and the coverage is thin. A handful of crochet listings came back and very little else, while handwoven and quilted goods came back deep. So this page runs shorter than the woodcraft and candle roundups, and rather than pad it with factory throws relabelled as artisan, we are telling you why.

If you specifically want hand-knitted wool, this marketplace is not where it is. If what you actually want is a genuinely handmade blanket, there are two better routes, and both are on this page.

Route one: crochet, because there is no machine

There is no industrial crochet machine. The mechanics of crochet — a single hook pulling loops through loops in sequence — have never been successfully automated, which means every crocheted object on any marketplace, at any price, was made by a person's hands.

That makes crochet the single most reliably handmade category in all of textiles, and it is why a made-to-order crochet blanket is worth its lead time. When a listing says hand-crocheted, that part is not a claim you need to evaluate. It is the only way the object could exist.

Route two: weaving, which this marketplace does have

Handwoven blankets — foot-loom and backstrap woven, largely from Central and South American weaving traditions — are well represented and often excellent. The handwoven throws page covers them properly, and for most people looking for a handmade blanket, that is where to go rather than here.

The visual difference is real: a woven blanket has a flat structured surface with the pattern built into the threads, while a knitted one has visible stitch loops and stretch. Knitted is cozier; woven drapes better and is generally more durable.

Alpaca, and why it is the pick

Alpaca fiber is hollow, which is why it insulates better than sheep's wool at a lower weight, and it contains no lanolin, which is the component most people who say they cannot wear wool are actually reacting to. It is also smoother-scaled than wool, so it feels less prickly against skin.

At queen size — 90 x 80 inches — it stops being a throw and becomes a bed blanket, and that size is what makes it a serious gift rather than a decorative one. It is the most expensive fiber item on this site and the one most likely to still be in use in twenty years.

Color, and the rule we would follow

Textiles are the second-riskiest handmade gift after candles, and color is why. A blanket occupies a room you may not have seen, and a bold one is either exactly right or folded into a cupboard within a month.

The rule: if you have stood in the room, buy the color. If you have not, buy the neutral and buy it bigger. Size forgives far more than color does. A generous gray or natural throw gets used by anybody; a striking striped one needs to be right.

Washing, which is where blankets die

Heat and agitation felt wool permanently — the scales on the fiber interlock and the blanket shrinks, thickens and stops being a blanket. It cannot be reversed. That single mistake accounts for most ruined handmade blankets, and it usually happens the first time someone puts one through a normal cycle without thinking.

Cold water, no agitation, dry flat. If you are giving a wool or alpaca blanket, say so when you give it — wool and fiber care has the full method and is worth four minutes.
