Handmade sterling silver
925 is a real standard with a real number behind it. Silver tone is a description of a color.

The one we would not buy
Jewelry described as "silver tone" or "silver plated"
Neither is silver in any useful sense. Silver tone means the object is gray. Silver plated means a microns-thin layer over a base metal that wears through at contact points within a year or two, exposing what is underneath — which in cheap jewelry is frequently nickel, the most common contact allergen there is. For anything worn against skin daily, this is a practical objection rather than a snobbish one.

Bottled Up Designs Vintage Lace Leverback Earrings
by Bottled Up Designs
For someone who actually wears earrings all day. Sterling leverbacks with a lace-patterned drop, made in the USA from reclaimed material.
Leverbacks are the detail that matters here: they latch closed, so they do not fall out and disappear the way a hook does. That makes them the right choice for someone who actually wears earrings all day rather than for an evening. The lace pattern is stamped rather than cast, so each pair varies slightly. Sterling, so no reaction for most people with sensitive ears.

Sterling Silver Thick Spiral Hoops
For taste closer to sculpture than to sparkle. Heavy forged sterling with a hammered finish — no stones, no plating, no delicacy.
Most handmade silver on the marketplace is thin wire and a bead. This is thick stock, formed and hammered, which is a different skill and a different object: it has weight in the hand and a surface that catches light unevenly. Unisex by design. It is the pair to buy for someone who finds conventional jewelry fussy.
Worth knowing first
Genuinely heavy for an earring. If the recipient prefers something they forget they are wearing, choose the leverbacks instead.

Sterling Silver Black Onyx Drop Earrings
For an evening, or someone who wears a lot of black. Oval black onyx set in sterling — the dressiest pair here, at sixty dollars.
Onyx is genuinely black rather than very dark gray, which is what makes it work against black clothing where most dark stones disappear. Bezel-set in sterling rather than prong-set, so nothing snags. This is the pair for a milestone birthday or an anniversary, where a small pair of studs would read as too casual.

GEMINSPIRE Raw Garnet Sterling Pendant
by GEMINSPIRE
For a January birthday, or rough stones over cut ones. An uncut garnet wrapped in sterling — the stone is the point, not the setting.
A raw stone is a different proposition from a faceted one: it looks like something found rather than something bought, and no two pendants are the same shape. Garnet is the January birthstone, which gives the gift a reason without needing an explanation. Sterling chain and setting rather than plated, which matters for anything worn against skin daily.
Worth knowing first
Raw stones vary in size and shade. You are buying the type, not the exact piece pictured.

Sterling Silver Moon Dangle Earrings
For the safest sterling gift there is. A small crescent on a sterling wire — legible, light and hard to get wrong.
Motif jewelry usually fails because the motif is too specific. A crescent moon is one of the few shapes that reads as intentional without reading as a statement, which is why it works when you are buying for someone whose taste you only half know. Light enough for all-day wear, cheap enough to give alongside something else.

Sundance Dreams Floral Teardrop Earrings
by Sundance Dreams Designs
For part of a larger gift rather than the whole one. Stamped floral teardrops on sterling wires, under twenty-five dollars.
Hand-stamping is the entry point of silversmithing and it is honest about being that — the impressions vary in depth from piece to piece, which is what tells you a person did it. At this price the pair works as a component of a larger gift rather than the whole gift. Sterling wires mean no green ears.

Of Earth and Ocean Halo Dangle Hoops
by Of Earth and Ocean
For a named US workshop rather than an anonymous storefront. Made on Cape Cod by a maker who is named on the listing — traceable, which most are not.
Nearly every handmade jewelry listing is anonymous: a brand name, no person, no place. This one names both, which is the single most useful signal available when you cannot hold the object. The design is a plain halo hoop, so it works with almost anything. Buy this when the provenance is part of the gift.

What 925 actually means
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver alloyed with 7.5% other metal, almost always copper. Pure silver is too soft to hold a shape in jewelry; the copper gives it structure. The 925 stamp is the mark of that standard, and it is checkable — a maker who has it stamps it, because it is the single most valuable thing they can put on the piece.
Its absence on something described as silver is not proof of anything, but it is a question worth asking. Every piece on this page states 925.
Tarnish is not damage
Sterling reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and darkens. That is tarnish, it is a surface effect, and a polishing cloth reverses it in about a minute. It says nothing about quality — a purer silver would tarnish faster, not slower.
The contrast worth understanding: plated jewelry does not tarnish in the same way. It wears through, and that cannot be reversed. So the maintenance question is backwards from how people usually frame it — sterling asks for a minute of polishing occasionally, plated asks for nothing and then fails permanently.
Storage helps more than polishing. An airtight bag with an anti-tarnish strip slows the reaction to almost nothing, which is why jewelry kept in a closed box tarnishes far less than jewelry left on a dish.
The closure decides whether it gets worn
- Leverback
- Latches closed. The safest all-day closure and the right choice for someone who genuinely wears earrings from morning to night — a hook can and does fall out.
- Hook / french wire
- Simple, comfortable, and the most likely to be lost. Fine for an evening; risky for a commute.
- Stud
- Lowest profile, safest, and the most forgiving of taste. If you are uncertain about someone's style, studs are the low-variance option.
- Threader
- A chain that passes through the ear and hangs on both sides. Distinctive and light, but easy to pull out accidentally.
Our practical rule: buy the closure they already wear. Somebody who wears studs every day is not going to switch to statement drops because you gave them a pair.
Sensitive ears
The usual culprit in a reaction is nickel, which is common in the base metal under plating and in cheap ear wires. Sterling silver is safe for most people, and the detail worth checking is that the ear wire itself is sterling, not just the decorative part — a sterling pendant on a base-metal hook is the exact configuration that causes a reaction.
Where a listing specifies hypoallergenic without saying what the metal is, treat that as marketing rather than information. Sterling, surgical steel and titanium are the claims that mean something.
Buying silver for someone whose taste you half know
Sterling is unusually forgiving here because it is a neutral. It goes with almost anything, and unlike gold it does not carry a strong stylistic signal. That makes it the safest metal to buy for someone whose jewelry you have not paid close attention to.
The two things to still get right: closure (above) and scale. Look at what they wear — small and close to the ear, or long and moving. Those two are more predictive than any design choice you could make.
