Handmade sterling silver rings

A ring is the one piece of jewelry that fails on a number. Get the size wrong and the rest of the decision was wasted.

The one we would not buy

A fixed-size ring bought on a guess

There is no average finger. Adult ring sizes run roughly from 4 to 13 and the common assumption that 6 or 7 is safe is a coin flip in practice — fingers also change size with temperature, salt and the time of day. A ring that does not fit is a ring in a drawer, and resizing a cast or stone-set band is a jeweler's trip, a fee, and sometimes not possible at all. If you do not have a real measurement, buy an adjustable band from this page, or buy earrings.

The picks, in full

01
Hammered Sterling Silver Wide Wrap Band
Amazon HandmadeBest overall

Hammered Sterling Silver Wide Wrap Band

For a surprise, because the band wraps across sizes 6 to 12. A wide hammered band that wraps rather than closes, adjustable across sizes 6 to 12.

Sterling silverHammered finishAdjustable, sizes 6-12Wears as a thumb ring

This is the answer to the problem that sinks most ring gifts. The band is open and wraps, so the listing covers sizes 6 to 12 and the wearer sets the fit with light finger pressure — and it works as a thumb ring if it ends up loose. The hammered surface is the part a machine does not do convincingly: the marks are irregular, they catch light unevenly, and they are visible from across a table.

Worth knowing first

Adjustable bands are not meant to be reshaped often. Opening and closing one repeatedly will eventually fatigue the silver.

Adita Gold Adjustable Feather Spiral Ring
Amazon HandmadeBest under $25

Adita Gold Adjustable Feather Spiral Ring

by Adita Gold

For a first silver ring, or something to add to a larger gift. An open-ended spiral in 925 that fits any finger, for under ten dollars.

925 sterling silverOpen-ended spiralFits any fingerDainty profile

The cheapest thing on this page and the one with the fewest ways to go wrong: the band is open-ended and spiral, so there is no size to get right at all, and the feather is formed in the metal rather than stamped on top of it. Ten dollars is also the right price for a ring you are putting inside a larger gift, where a fifty-dollar band would unbalance the box.

Worth knowing first

Thin silver at this price bends easily. It is a pretty ring, not an heirloom.

03
Sterling Silver Nature Leaf Statement Wrap Ring
Amazon HandmadeBest statement

Sterling Silver Nature Leaf Statement Wrap Ring

For someone who wears form rather than sparkle. A large leaf-form wrap band, adjustable 6 to 11, that reads as an object rather than a ring.

Sterling silverLeaf formAdjustable, sizes 6-11Wears as a thumb ring

Statement rings fail when they are a big stone on a thin band, because the stone is the only idea. Here the form is the idea: the leaf is worked into the band itself, so there is nothing set, nothing to lose and nothing to re-glue. Adjustable 6 to 11 per the listing, which keeps it giftable. Buy it for the person who already owns the small tasteful things.

Worth knowing first

It is genuinely large. For someone who wears one thin band and nothing else, this is the wrong register.

Hammered Sterling Silver Stacking Ring Set
Amazon HandmadeBest value

Hammered Sterling Silver Stacking Ring Set

For a ring wearer who already owns several. Skinny hammered knuckle bands meant to be worn several at a time.

925 sterling silverHammered finishSkinny knuckle bandsStacking set

Stacking rings change the sizing problem rather than solving it: thin bands sit comfortably over a wider range than a wide band does, and the look works whether two or four are on at once. Hammered rather than smooth, which is what keeps them from reading as wire. Sixteen dollars makes this the best value on the page for someone who is already a ring wearer.

Worth knowing first

Thin bands on a knuckle do slide and spin. They are also easy to lose, which is a real consideration for a gift.

05
Hammered Sterling Silver Spinner Ring
Amazon HandmadeBest to fidget with

Hammered Sterling Silver Spinner Ring

For restless hands, and anyone who takes a ring off in meetings. A hammered outer band that spins on a fixed inner band — a ring with something to do.

925 sterling silverSpinning outer bandHammered finish

A spinner has an outer band that rotates freely around the inner one, and the reason to buy it is behavioral rather than decorative: people who turn things over in their fingers keep it on. It is the one ring style on this page that gets more wear the more restless the wearer is. Hammered outer band, 925 throughout per the listing.

Worth knowing first

Spinners are heavier and taller than they look in photographs, and the moving band collects soap. Check the size before ordering — this is not a wrap band.

Avicrafts Turquoise Stone Statement Ring

by Avicrafts

For a real opaque stone under thirty dollars, if you know the size. A set turquoise stone in 925, listed in US size 8 — a real stone at under thirty dollars.

925 sterling silverTurquoise stoneFixed size: US 8

Turquoise is the stone that still looks like a stone: opaque, veined, different in every piece, and impossible to confuse with cut glass. At under thirty dollars in sterling rather than plate, this is the honest version of a gemstone ring. The reason it is not our overall pick is the one thing you cannot adjust — the listing is a fixed US size 8.

Worth knowing first

Fixed size 8. Do not buy it as a surprise unless you have measured, and do not assume 7 is average — it is a guess either way.

07
Hammered Sterling Silver Pipe-Cut Band, 6 mm
Amazon HandmadeBest when you know the size

Hammered Sterling Silver Pipe-Cut Band, 6 mm

For a replacement, or a ring they picked out themselves. A plain hammered 6 mm band offered across US sizes 4 to 13, for either hand.

925 sterling silverHammered flat pipe cut6 mm wideUS sizes 4-13

When the size is known, a properly fitted closed band beats every adjustable compromise on this page: it sits level, it does not spin, and it can be worn every day for years. Six millimeters is the width that works on most hands without becoming a wedding band, and a size run from 4 to 13 covers both the person it is for and whoever else it ends up fitting.

Worth knowing first

Fixed size, so it needs a real measurement. A silver band of this width can be resized by a jeweler, but that is a trip and a fee.

Size is the whole problem

Everything else about buying a ring is pleasant. The metal is checkable, the maker is often named, the styles are distinct, and good handmade silver sits between ten and seventy dollars, which is a forgiving range. Then there is a number between 4 and 13 that decides whether any of that mattered, and in a gift situation you usually do not have it.

So this page is built around that fact rather than around style. Five of the seven picks are adjustable, wrap or spiral bands that cover a range of sizes instead of one, and the two fixed-size picks are marked clearly as requiring a measurement. That is also why the skip call on this page is not a product — it is a decision.

How to find a size without asking

In rough order of reliability, and all of these beat guessing.

  1. Borrow a ring she already wears — on the correct hand and finger — and measure its inside diameter in millimeters. A ring she wears on her right middle finger tells you very little about her left ring finger.
  2. Trace the inside of that ring on paper and measure across it. Less precise, and still much better than a guess.
  3. Ask someone who would know and will not tell: a sibling, a close friend, a parent. This is the method that gets used and nobody regrets.
  4. Buy a cheap plastic sizer strip and have her try it as part of something else entirely. Slightly devious, entirely effective.
  5. Buy adjustable. Which is the honest answer for most gifts, and the reason this page leads with one.

Two things to know even once you have a number. Fingers are measurably bigger in heat and after salty food, so a ring fitted on a summer evening may be loose in January. And a wide band needs roughly half a size more than a thin one at the same finger, because there is more metal in contact — which is why width appears in the table below.

Adjustable, wrap and spiral: what each one means

Wrap or adjustable band
An open band whose ends overlap or nearly meet. The wearer squeezes or eases it to fit, and a single ring covers a stated range — typically six sizes. The best compromise for a gift, and the format of our overall pick.
Spiral
A continuous coil with no fixed circumference at all. It genuinely fits any finger, which makes it the safest thing to send blind. It is also the most delicate of the three.
Stacking band
A thin ring designed to be worn two or three at a time. Thin bands tolerate a wider range of fingers comfortably than wide ones do, so the sizing stakes are lower even though each ring is fixed.
Fixed or closed band
A complete circle in one size. The best thing to wear every day — it sits level, does not spin and never needs reshaping — and the worst thing to buy as a surprise.

One honest limitation on the first two: an adjustable band is not meant to be opened and closed daily. Silver work-hardens, and a band reshaped every morning will eventually crack at the overlap. They are adjustable so that one ring fits one person, not so that it can be passed around a table.

925, and the words that are not 925

Sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver alloyed with copper for strength, and it is stamped 925. That is a real standard with a number behind it, and any seller who can claim it will, because it is the most valuable fact they have. Every pick on this page states sterling or 925 on the listing.

The words that are not that: silver plated means a microns-thin layer over a base metal, and it wears through at the knuckle within a year or two — which is worse on a ring than on any other piece of jewelry, because a ring is handled constantly. Silver tone and silver-colored describe a color and nothing else. Nickel silver and German silver contain no silver at all, and nickel is the metal most people with jewelry sensitivities react to. How to tell real sterling silver from plated covers the marks and the simple tests.

What a hand actually leaves behind

Rings are easier to fake convincingly than mugs or boards, because casting from a master model is both a legitimate silversmithing technique and the way mass production works. So the question is not whether a ring was cast — many handmade rings are — but whether a person made the thing you are looking at.

Hammered surfaces are the most reliable tell at this price. A hand-hammered band has marks of slightly different depths at slightly irregular intervals, the light breaks unevenly across it, and no two photographs of the same listing look quite the same. A machine-textured band repeats. Forged and formed shapes — a leaf worked into the band, a spiral drawn and coiled, a wide band wrapped rather than closed — are also hand operations; there is nothing glued and nothing set, which is why they are the hardest to get wrong and the longest-lived.

Where a listing offers one ring in twelve identical finishes with studio lighting and no variation, treat it as production. That is not automatically bad, but it should be labeled, and on this site it is. How to spot resold mass production is the general version of this test, and handmade sterling silver applies it to the wider jewelry category.

Stones, and which ones survive being worn

A ring takes more physical abuse than anything else a person wears — doors, pockets, steering wheels, keyboards. That rules out more stone settings than people expect, and it is the reason the stone pick on this page is an opaque cabochon rather than something faceted.

Opaque stones set flush or in a bezel — turquoise, onyx, lapis, moonstone — are the ones that last, because there is nothing sticking up to catch and the setting wraps the stone rather than gripping it with prongs. They also still look like stones: veined, uneven, different in every piece, impossible to confuse with glass. Faceted stones in raised prong settings are a different purchase with a different lifespan, and at under fifty dollars they are usually cubic zirconia, which is fine as long as nobody is told otherwise.

Width, and why 6 mm is the safe number

Band widthReads asSizing note
1-2 mmA stacking band, worn in multiplesForgiving; slides and spins on its own
3-4 mmA delicate everyday ringTrue to size
5-6 mmA present ring — visible, not loudAllow about half a size up
7 mm and overA statement or thumb ringAllow a full size up; wide bands fit tightly

Six millimeters is the width that is clearly a ring rather than a wire and clearly not a wedding band, which makes it the safest choice for a gift where you do not know the taste. It is also the width where a hammered surface has enough room to be visible from across a table, which is the whole point of buying a hammered band.

Care: tarnish is not damage

Sterling darkens because the copper in the alloy reacts with sulfur in the air. It is a surface film, it comes off with a polishing cloth in under a minute, and a ring worn daily barely tarnishes at all because skin contact keeps polishing it. Nothing has gone wrong and nothing has been lost.

Two things actually do damage. Chlorine, which attacks the copper in the alloy — take rings off before a pool or a hot tub. And ultrasonic cleaners on anything with a set stone, particularly turquoise, which is porous and can be loosened or discolored. Hand cream and soap build up under a band and in a spinner's moving parts; warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft brush handles it.

What to buy instead if the size is a mystery

Sometimes the right answer is not a ring. If the size is genuinely unknown, the person is not a ring wearer, or the gift has to be opened in front of other people, these are the categories that carry the same weight without the number: handmade earrings, which have no fit at all, and handmade necklaces, where an adjustable or sliding chain solves the equivalent problem. Handmade gifts for her is the wider shortlist if jewelry is not settled either.

And if the ring is the point and the measurement exists, buy the fitted band. Every adjustable compromise on this page is a compromise; a properly sized closed band is the better object and will be worn longer.

Questions people actually ask

What ring size should I buy if I do not know hers?
Do not pick one. Adult sizes run roughly 4 to 13 and there is no safe average, so a guess is a coin flip and a wrong guess means a drawer. Buy an adjustable, wrap or spiral band instead — five of the seven picks on this page cover a range of sizes rather than a single one.
Are adjustable rings any good, or a compromise?
Both. They solve the sizing problem completely, which is worth a lot in a gift, and a wide wrap band is a perfectly good everyday ring. The limitation is that silver work-hardens, so they are not meant to be opened and closed daily. If you have a real measurement, a fitted band is the better object.
What does 925 mean on a silver ring?
92.5 percent silver, alloyed with copper for strength — the sterling standard. Silver plated, silver tone, nickel silver and German silver are not that: the first wears through, the second describes a color, and the last two contain no silver at all.
Will a sterling silver ring tarnish?
Yes, and it is not damage. The copper in the alloy reacts with sulfur in the air to leave a surface film that a polishing cloth removes in a minute. A ring worn every day hardly tarnishes, because skin contact keeps polishing it.
How can I tell a handmade silver ring from a mass-produced one?
Look at a hammered surface closely. Hand-hammered marks vary in depth and spacing and break the light unevenly; machine texture repeats. Formed shapes — a wrapped band, a drawn spiral, a leaf worked into the metal — are hand operations with nothing glued or set. A listing offering one ring in twelve identical finishes is production.
Should I buy a ring with a stone in it?
An opaque stone in a bezel setting, yes — turquoise, onyx and lapis sit flush, catch on nothing and survive daily wear. Faceted stones in raised prongs are a different purchase, and under fifty dollars they are usually cubic zirconia, which is fine as long as nobody is told it is something else.
