Handmade necklaces
A necklace is the easiest piece of jewelry to buy wrong, and almost all of the risk sits in one measurement.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the order of the picks, and we say so when the cheaper thing is the better buy. How this works.

The one we would not buy
Gemstone necklaces sold with healing or wellness claims
The stones are usually real and often well set, so the objection is not to the jewelry. It is that you are paying a premium for a claim about health that nobody can support, and handing the recipient a gift with an assertion attached to it. Buy the same stone from a maker who sells it as a stone. Where listing copy is about chakras and anxiety rather than about the metal, the setting and the chain, that tells you where the maker's attention went.

Annika Bella Turquoise Lariat Necklace
by Annika Bella
For removing the length problem completely. An adjustable sliding lariat, so length is the wearer's decision rather than ours.
Necklace length is the reason most necklace gifts sit in a drawer: 16 inches is wrong for a high collar and 24 is wrong under a crew neck. A sliding lariat removes the problem entirely — the wearer sets it. Turquoise beads on a water-resistant cord, so it survives being worn rather than stored.

Pillar of Salt Studio Black Onyx Copper Necklace
by Pillar of Salt Studio
For someone who already owns enough silver. Antiqued copper wire around a black onyx stone, made in Minnesota by the studio that sells it.
Copper is the metal almost nobody gives, which is most of the argument for it: it is warm against skin, it darkens into its own patina, and it leaves the budget for a real stone instead of spending it all on the metal. The listing names the state it is made in and the studio ships it itself, which is about as traceable as handmade jewelry gets. The pendant measures roughly an inch long per the listing, so it reads as a piece rather than a charm.
Worth knowing first
The pendant is copper wire but the 18-inch chain is copper-plated brass, which is a different thing and will wear at the clasp eventually. Copper also marks some skin green temporarily - harmless, washes off, worth knowing before you gift it.

GEMINSPIRE Raw Garnet Sterling Pendant
by GEMINSPIRE
For a January birthday, or rough stones over cut ones. An uncut garnet wrapped in sterling — the stone is the point, not the setting.
A raw stone is a different proposition from a faceted one: it looks like something found rather than something bought, and no two pendants are the same shape. Garnet is the January birthstone, which gives the gift a reason without needing an explanation. Sterling chain and setting rather than plated, which matters for anything worn against skin daily.
Worth knowing first
Raw stones vary in size and shade. You are buying the type, not the exact piece pictured.

SilveristicJewelry Personalized Initial Necklace
by SilveristicJewelry
For specific to the person and still neutral in style. A single letter in nickel-free 925 sterling, made to order in five chain lengths with an extender.
Personalization usually narrows a gift until only one person could ever wear it. An initial is the exception: specific to the recipient and still completely neutral in style, which is why it survives taste changing. The genuinely useful detail here is the sizing - the listing offers 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 inch chains plus a 1.5 inch extender, so you can buy a length rather than hope. Stated as nickel-free solid sterling rather than plated base metal.
Worth knowing first
Made to order means it is not a next-day gift - order with time in hand. The gold and rose gold versions are plating over sterling and will wear thin at the edges in a few years; the plain silver will not.

North Rustic Real Birch Leaf Necklace
by North Rustic
For someone who would rather wear an object than a design. A real birch leaf dipped in copper, so the veining is the leaf's own and no two are identical.
This is a found object rather than a manufactured one: an actual leaf is coated in metal, which preserves the exact vein pattern it grew with. That is why the pieces cannot be made to match, and it is the whole appeal - the detail is finer than any casting would bother reproducing. It reads as a nature piece rather than as jewelry, which suits someone who finds conventional pendants fussy.
Worth knowing first
You are buying the type, not the leaf in the photograph - shape and size vary, which is the point but still worth saying. A dipped leaf is rigid rather than flexible, and the finish will scratch if it is kept loose in a bag.

Hefestus Pressed Flower Pendant
by Hefestus
For a gardener, or anyone whose favorite thing in the house is a plant. Real hydrangea and cornflower set in resin — actual flowers, not printed ones.
The distinction that matters: these are pressed botanical specimens suspended in resin, not a photograph of flowers. Hold it to the light and you can see the petal structure. That is a real craft process with a real failure rate, which is why the pieces vary. Under forty dollars, which is remarkable for something this specific.
Worth knowing first
Resin scratches more easily than glass and yellows in strong sun over years. Keep it out of a car windscreen.

Braided Teardrop Sea Glass Necklace
by yinahawaii
For something worn with a t-shirt rather than saved for an evening. Hand-braided cord around a sea glass teardrop — casual enough to wear every day.
The braided cord is what makes this wearable in the daytime; the same stone on a fine chain would read as evening jewelry. Hawaii-made and hand-braided, so the knotwork varies piece to piece. Pairs naturally with the EcoSeaCo earrings if you want a two-item gift that looks planned rather than assembled.

Zulasurfing Studios Pewter Cross on Leather Cord
by Zulasurfing Studios
For a man or teenager who wears nothing else around his neck. A small lead-free pewter cross on a leather cord, cast in New York and finished in the maker's Florida studio.
Men's necklaces fail in two directions - too heavy to actually wear, or too delicate to look right - and a small pendant on a leather cord avoids both. The pewter is stated as a lead-free low-melt alloy, which is the detail that matters for anything resting against skin all day, and the maker names where each stage of the work happens rather than leaving the supply chain blank. It arrives in the studio's own box, so it needs nothing added.
Worth knowing first
It is a cross, so it carries a meaning you cannot take back out of it - right for someone with the faith, awkward for someone without it. The cord is stiff when new and takes a few weeks of wear to soften.

Length decides whether it gets worn, and nothing else comes close
Necklaces sit unworn in drawers for one reason far more often than any other: the chain is the wrong length for the necklines the person actually owns. Sixteen inches disappears under a crew neck. Twenty-four inches hangs below a shirt collar and looks accidental. Neither is a quality problem and neither can be fixed afterwards, which is why it is the first thing to settle and the last thing most gift guides mention.
If you can see a necklace they already wear, measure that one and buy the same length. If you cannot, there are two honest ways out: buy a piece with an adjustable slide so the wearer sets it, or buy one with a stated extender so there are two lengths in the box. Three of the picks above do one or the other, and that is most of why they rank where they do.
The four standard lengths, and who each suits
- Choker, 14-16 in
- Sits at the base of the neck. The most style-specific length there is and the easiest to get wrong as a gift, because it only works with open necklines and only on people who like something close to the throat.
- Princess, 17-19 in
- Rests just below the collarbone. This is the default for a reason - it works with the widest range of necklines and reads as deliberate on almost everybody. If you genuinely have no information, 18 inches is the lowest-risk number on this page.
- Matinee, 20-24 in
- Falls on the chest, over a shirt rather than inside it. Good for layering and good for anyone who wears collars, and the right length when the pendant is large enough to want space around it.
- Adjustable or lariat
- A sliding knot or an open design the wearer closes at whatever length suits. The answer when you are buying for someone whose necklines you have never noticed - the decision moves to the person who has the information.
The clasp is the second failure point
A clasp has one job and a surprising number of ways to fail at it. The practical ranking, from a gift-giving point of view rather than a jeweler point of view:
- Lobster clasp - a spring-loaded hook with a real gate. The default on anything decent, and the one to want if the pendant has any weight to it.
- Sliding knot or adjustable cord - no clasp at all, so there is nothing to break and nothing to fiddle with behind the neck. Best choice for anyone with arthritis or short fingernails.
- Spring ring - the small round clasp with a tiny lever. Fine on a light chain, undersized on a heavy pendant, and genuinely hard to operate one-handed.
- Magnetic - easy to fasten, easy to lose. A magnet strong enough to be safe is also strong enough to be awkward, and the weak ones let go inside a coat.
Where a listing does not say which clasp it uses, that is information too. Makers who chose a lobster clasp tend to mention it.
What handmade actually buys you in a necklace
Not better engineering. A factory chain is machine-consistent and that is a genuine advantage. What a handmade necklace buys is a material that cannot be reproduced on a line, and that is a real distinction rather than a marketing one.
Sea glass has to be found, not manufactured, which is why the shade is never quite repeatable. A pressed flower is an actual botanical specimen suspended in resin - hold it to a window and you can see the petal structure. A copper-dipped birch leaf keeps the vein pattern the leaf grew with. A raw garnet is the shape it came out of the ground in. None of those can be ordered to a spec sheet, and all four are on this page for exactly that reason.
If the handmade object in front of you could have been stamped out instead, you are paying for a story rather than a difference. What handmade actually means goes through the distinction in more detail, and spotting resold mass production covers the listings that fail it.
Metals, and which claims mean something
The only line in that table worth being inflexible about is the last one. Plating does not tarnish - it wears through, and that cannot be reversed. For anything worn against skin every day, that is a practical objection rather than a snobbish one. How to tell real sterling silver covers the stamp and the words to distrust.
Pendant weight has to match the chain
A heavy stone on a fine chain is the most common construction mistake in handmade jewelry, and it shows up two ways: the chain kinks where the bail sits, and the clasp migrates round to the front under the weight. Neither is cosmetic - a kinked link is where a chain eventually breaks.
The quick check on a listing: if the pendant is described in inches and the chain is not described at all, be cautious. Makers who matched the two tend to state both, as the copper necklace above does.
Personalization: when it helps, when it traps you
An initial is the one personalization that does not narrow the gift, because it is specific to the person and still stylistically neutral. A name, a date or a coordinate fixes the piece to a moment, which is right for an actual milestone and wrong as a general gift - the same logic that applies to a dated Christmas ornament.
The practical cost of personalization is time. Made-to-order pieces are cut, stamped or engraved after you pay, and in December that queue is long. If the occasion is fixed, order two weeks earlier than feels necessary, or buy something off the shelf and read the last-minute options instead.
Buying for someone whose jewelry you have never really looked at
Two observations do almost all the work, and both are available at a family dinner. First, metal temperature: do they wear warm metals (gold, copper, brass) or cool ones (silver, steel)? Almost everybody is consistent about this without being able to articulate it, and a mismatch is the usual reason a gift gets admired and never worn. Second, scale: small and close to the skin, or large and deliberate?
Get those two right and the specific design matters much less than it feels like it should. Get them wrong and the piece becomes a compliment they have to perform. If both answers are genuinely unknown, the adjustable turquoise lariat above is the lowest-variance thing on the page: neutral metal, wearer-set length, casual enough to wear with denim.
When the person is a sister, a partner or a close friend, you usually have more information than you think - gifts for your sister and gifts for her are both built around using it.
Care, briefly
Store a chain closed and flat, or hanging. A necklace dropped into a dish knots itself, and most broken handmade chains were broken by somebody untangling one. Keep sterling in a closed bag between wears and it barely tarnishes; keep resin out of a sunny car; take copper off before a long soak in hot water. How to keep sterling silver from tarnishing is the full routine, and sterling silver vs stainless steel is the material comparison.
