The one we would not buy

Boxed sets of printed glass balls sold as "artisan" or "hand-decorated"

The giveaway is that every ball in the box is identical. A mouth-blown ornament varies - wall thickness, the shape at the neck, the exact depth of the color - because a person blew each one. A machine-blown ball with a transfer applied to it varies by nothing, and the words hand-decorated are doing a lot of work for one step in a factory process. There is nothing wrong with cheap decorations; there is something wrong with paying a handmade premium for them.

Old World Christmas Blown Glass Ornament
Amazon HandmadeBest overall

Old World Christmas Blown Glass Ornament

by Old World Christmas

For a household with an ornament-per-year tradition. Mouth-blown into a mold and hand-painted, at ten dollars.

Mouth-blown glassHand paintedChristmas ornament

Blown glass is one of the few crafts where a ten-dollar object is still genuinely hand-made: the glass is blown into a mold by a person, then silvered and painted by hand. Old World has been doing it the same way for decades, which is why the ornaments look nothing like the printed plastic in the same price band. If a household has an ornament-per-year tradition, this is the category to buy from.

Worth knowing first

It is glass and it is thin. Not the ornament for the lowest branch in a house with a large dog.

Old World Christmas Regal Father Christmas Ornament

by Old World Christmas

For a tree that is collected rather than decorated. Mouth-blown and hand-painted in the 1800s way, at a price that still reads as a gift rather than a purchase.

Mouth-blown glassHand-painted, antique glass finishFather Christmas figure

This is the upper end of the same craft that makes a ten-dollar blown ornament remarkable: the glass is mouth-blown into a mold, silvered, then painted by hand, and on a figure this detailed the painting is most of the labor. The listing states the technique and the antique glass finish, which is why the color sits under the surface rather than on it. If somebody already has a tree of these, this is the one to add.

Worth knowing first

Thin glass on a figure with projecting parts - it belongs on an upper branch, and it needs the original box for the eleven months it spends in storage. It is also a specific figure rather than a neutral shape, so it suits a traditional tree better than a minimal one.

McIntosh Woodworking Pine Tree Ornament, 3 in

by McIntosh Woodworking & Laser Engraving

For low branches, children, or a dog with a tail. Two layers of wood cut into pine tree silhouettes, personalized in the middle, made in the USA.

Two-layer wood build3 in diameterPersonalized name, phrase or dateMade in USA

Wood is the material that solves the only real problem with ornaments, which is that the good ones are glass. This one is a natural wood face over a colored backdrop so the trees read as cut-outs rather than print, and the center panel takes a name, a phrase or a date. Three inches is large enough to be seen from across a room. The listing also points out it works on a rearview mirror, which is a fair use for it in January.

Worth knowing first

It is laser-cut rather than hand-carved, so the craft is in the design and the assembly rather than in the cutting - we would rather say that than let the word handmade do work it has not earned. Made to order with a name on it, which means ordering in November, not December.

Stone House Crafts Wool Felted Acorn Ornaments, Set of 8

by Stone House Crafts

For filling in a tree, or one gift that covers eight people. Eight needle-felted acorns with real caps - the cheapest genuinely hand-made thing per piece on this page.

Needle-felted woolReal acorn capsSet of 8

Needle felting has no machine equivalent: the wool is locked together by being stabbed repeatedly with a barbed needle, so every one of these eight was made by hand by definition. Buying a set is the right unit here, because a single felted acorn disappears on a tree while eight of them read as a decision. Soft, so they survive the box, the post and the floor.

Worth knowing first

These are fall colors rather than Christmas red and green, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on the tree. The listing sells the same set two ways - make sure you choose the ornament option with hangers rather than the loose acorns.

Melanie's Glass Art Stained Glass Angel Ornament

by Melanie's Glass Art

For the eleven months after the tree comes down. Cut and soldered stained glass that works as a suncatcher once the tree comes down.

Hand-cut stained glassSoldered seamsOrnament or sun catcher

Stained glass is the one ornament craft where you can see the whole process in the finished object: each piece of colored glass is scored, broken, ground to fit and joined with solder lines you can trace with a fingernail. That also makes it the only ornament on this page with a second job - hang it in a window in January and it is a suncatcher, which is more than most Christmas objects manage. Sold directly by the glass artist.

Worth knowing first

Stock on a one-person glass studio is genuinely small, so this can sell out inside a week in December - if the buy link shows it unavailable, that is the reason. Soldered glass is also heavier than it looks and wants a sturdy branch.

Needle-Felted Woodland Raccoon Ornament
Amazon HandmadeBest under $15

Needle-Felted Woodland Raccoon Ornament

For a stocking, and a craft with no machine equivalent. Needle-felted wool — a craft with no machine equivalent, for twelve dollars.

Needle-felted woolOrnament or stocking stuffer

Needle felting is done by repeatedly stabbing loose wool with a barbed needle until the fibers lock. There is no industrial shortcut, so every felted object on any marketplace was made by a person. At twelve dollars that makes this one of the highest handmade-per-dollar items you can buy, and it is soft, so it survives the box and the dog.

Personalized Wooden First Christmas Ornament

For an actual first - married, new house, new baby. Solid wood, engraved with a year, and it will outlive every glass ornament on the tree.

Solid woodPersonalized names and yearMade to order

Firsts are the one occasion where a dated object is a feature rather than a liability. Wood is the right material for it because it survives twenty years in a cardboard box in an attic, which glass does not. Made to order with the year and names engraved rather than printed, so it does not fade.

Worth knowing first

Made to order in December means it may not arrive for December. Order in November.

Why an ornament is the best cheap handmade gift there is

Almost everywhere else on this site, genuinely handmade objects stop being available somewhere below twenty-five dollars, because the labor in a hand-made thing rarely costs less than that. Ornaments are the exception, and there are two reasons for it.

The first is that several ornament crafts are fast - a needle-felted shape or a mouth-blown glass form takes minutes rather than hours, so the labor fits inside a ten-dollar price. The second is that an ornament is small, so the material cost is near zero and the price is almost entirely the making. That combination is unusual, and it is why a ten-dollar ornament can be a real craft object while a ten-dollar bowl cannot.

It is also the best gift for someone with no space. An ornament takes up nothing, comes out once a year, and in a household that decorates a tree it accumulates meaning in a way almost nothing else at this price does.

The four ornament crafts, and what each actually involves

Mouth-blown glass
Molten glass blown by lung into a mold, then silvered on the inside and painted on the outside by hand. The painting is most of the labor on a detailed figure, which is why two ornaments from the same mold sell at very different prices. Thin, light, and the most fragile thing on this page.
Needle felting
Loose wool stabbed repeatedly with a barbed needle until the fibers lock into a shape. There is no industrial shortcut at all, which means every felted ornament on any marketplace was made by a person. Soft, so it survives the box, the post and the floor.
Stained glass
Colored glass scored, broken, ground to fit and joined with solder. You can see the whole process in the finished object and trace the seams with a fingernail. Heavier than it looks, and the only craft here that doubles as a window piece.
Wood
Either carved, turned or laser-cut and assembled. Worth knowing which: carving and turning are hand skills, laser cutting is a machine executing a design a person drew. Both produce good objects; only one of them should be described as handmade without qualification.

How to tell a hand-blown ornament from a printed one

This is the single most useful check in the category, because printed glass balls are everywhere and the listing language is deliberately blurry. Four signals, in order of reliability:

  • Variation between pieces. Hand-blown ornaments are photographed individually and the listing usually admits that yours will differ slightly. A set where all six look identical was not blown by hand.
  • Color under the surface rather than on it. Glass colored in the batch or painted and then lacquered has depth. A transfer sits flat on the glass and you can often see the edge of the film at an angle.
  • The neck and the crown. A mouth-blown ornament has a slightly irregular neck where it was removed from the pipe, and the metal cap rarely sits perfectly flush. A machine-blown ball is geometrically perfect there.
  • The maker is named, and where. Not a brand - a studio, a town, a person. The ornaments on this page name Minnesota, Florida, New York, a Vermont craft business and a one-person glass studio. Listings that name nowhere are usually resellers.

Spotting resold mass production applies the same reasoning across the rest of the site, and what handmade actually means sets out the four levels the word gets used for.

What survives eleven months in a box

Ornaments spend most of their lives in storage, usually in an attic or a garage with no climate control at all, which is a harder test than the tree. The ranking is not what you would guess from handling them.

MaterialIn storageOn the tree
WoodEssentially indestructible; may shrink slightly in dry heatSurvives children, pets and low branches
Felted woolCompresses and recovers; vulnerable only to mothsThe safest thing to hang where it can be knocked
Stained glassFine if packed flat; solder seams are strongHeavy - needs a sturdy branch
Mouth-blown glassNeeds its original box or it will not last five yearsUpper branches only
CeramicDurable but chips at the hanging holeHeavy for its size

The practical consequence: keep the box the glass came in. Old World ornaments ship in a fitted carton for a reason, and the households with twenty-year-old glass ornaments are the households that kept them. If you are giving glass to somebody who will not, give wood or wool instead.

Buying for a tree that already has a theme

Plenty of households decorate to a scheme - all white, all glass, red and gold, natural materials only - and an ornament outside the scheme does not go on the tree no matter how good it is. This is the most common way an ornament gift fails, and it is entirely avoidable.

If you have seen their tree, buy inside the scheme. If you have not, two safe routes: buy a material rather than a motif (plain wood, natural wool, clear glass fits almost any scheme), or buy something that is explicitly not for the tree - the stained glass piece above hangs in a window and sidesteps the question entirely.

Sets versus singles

A single small ornament disappears on a decorated tree, and it also disappears in a pile of gifts - which is the problem with giving one as a standalone present. Two ways to solve it, depending on what the gift is for.

Buy a set when the ornament is the whole gift. Eight felted acorns read as a decision; one reads as an afterthought, and the per-piece price of a set is usually lower. A set is also the efficient answer to a list of eight colleagues or eight nieces and nephews.

Buy a single good one when it is an addition - taped to a bottle, sitting in a stocking, or on top of a wrapped box. That is the role it plays best on a bigger gift: a felted acorn on the parcel holding a sister gift, or a blown-glass piece alongside a handmade necklace. In that role a detailed mouth-blown figure does more work than a whole box of plain balls, and it costs less than most wrapping. Stocking stuffers and gifts under $25 cover the same price band from the other direction.

Personalization and dating

A dated ornament is right for an actual first - first Christmas married, in a new house, with a new baby - and wrong as a general gift, because it is permanently fixed to a moment. Buy it for the first and not the fourth. A name without a year is far more flexible and still personal, which is why the wooden pick above takes a name, a phrase or a date rather than only a date.

The cost is lead time. Personalized ornaments are cut and engraved after you order, and that queue grows every week through December. Late November is the honest cutoff for anything made to order; after that, buy from stock and read the last-minute options.

A note on who you are actually buying from

Ornaments are the most heavily resold category in handmade retail, because they are small, cheap to ship and easy to buy in bulk. The useful habit is to look at who is fulfilling the listing rather than only at the brand on it - a one-person glass studio shipping its own work is a different proposition from the same ornament resold through a warehouse, even when the object is identical.

That is also why stock behaves strangely in this category in December. A small studio sells out and does not restock until the following autumn; a reseller never sells out. If a buy link below reads as unavailable, it is almost always the first of those. Supporting small makers goes into what the distinction is worth.

Questions people actually ask

Are handmade Christmas ornaments worth the money?
In this category, yes, and unusually so - mouth-blown glass and needle-felted wool are genuinely hand-made crafts available for ten to fifteen dollars, which is not true of almost any other handmade object.
How can I tell if a glass ornament is really hand-blown?
Look for variation between pieces, color with depth rather than a flat transfer, a slightly irregular neck where it left the pipe, and a named studio or town. A boxed set of six identical balls was not blown by hand.
Which handmade ornament is safest for a house with children or pets?
Felted wool first, then wood. Both survive being knocked off a low branch; mouth-blown glass does not, and belongs on upper branches only.
Should I buy a personalized ornament as a gift?
A name is flexible and still personal. A year fixes the ornament to a moment, so buy a dated one only for an actual first - first Christmas married, in a new house, or with a baby.
When do I need to order a handmade ornament for Christmas?
Late November for anything personalized or made to order, because those are made after you pay and the queue grows all month. Stock ornaments are the safest late buy in the whole category.
