2nd anniversary cotton gifts
Start with the personalized handloom cotton throw — woven cotton with the name embroidered rather than heat-pressed, which is the one version that survives being washed every fortnight. It is the right gift for a couple two years in who use a blanket on the sofa every night and have never bought a good one.

The one we would not buy
Printed cotton — the slogan t-shirt, the sublimated pillow, the vinyl tote
These dominate the search results for cotton anniversary gifts and they are the one group that reliably fails, because the cotton is not the gift: the print is, and the print is the part that cracks. Sublimation and heat transfer bond a layer to the outside of the cloth, so the first hot wash starts lifting it and the gift looks two years old at month four. Woven and embroidered cotton goes the other way — the pattern is structural, so it is still there when the cloth finally wears out. If a listing shows the front of the item and never the back, assume the back is blank.
The picks, in full

Personalized Handloom Cotton Throw
For a couple who want their names on the object, without the names being the object. Loom-woven cotton with an embroidered name, at well under a hundred dollars.
Most personalized blankets are printed fleece, which looks like what it is. This is woven cotton with the name embroidered rather than heat-pressed, so it survives washing and does not crack. Cotton makes it a year-round blanket rather than a winter one. It is the best value personalized textile we found on the marketplace.

Handloom Zigzag Cotton Throw
For a couple who would rather have the weave than their own names across it. A woven zigzag rather than a printed one, so the pattern goes all the way through.
The test for a real woven textile is the reverse side: on a woven piece the pattern exists on both faces because it is structural, and on a printed piece the back is blank. This one is woven. That is the whole reason to spend sixty-seven dollars on a cotton throw instead of twenty on a printed one.

Varunavi Handwoven Cotton Tapestry, 32 in
by Varunavi
For a second flat with one wall still empty and a budget under fifty dollars. Woven rather than printed, and large enough to actually fill a wall.
The macrame category on this marketplace is mostly small beaded pieces that get lost above a sofa. A 32-inch woven tapestry has the mass to work as the single object on a wall, which is what most people are actually shopping for when they search for a wall hanging. Woven cotton, so it has texture at close range as well as pattern at distance.

Woven Macrame Cotton Coasters, Pair
For the small cotton thing that turns a board or a mug into a complete gift. Nine dollars for two hand-knotted cotton coasters — the cheapest way to finish a gift box.
A board, a mug and a candle is a good gift box and a hard one; it is all hard edges. Two cotton coasters change the texture for under ten dollars. Absorbent and washable, unlike cork or slate, which is the practical argument for cotton coasters generally.

Moonlight Makers Flour Sack Kitchen Towel
by Moonlight Makers
For handing something over at the door when the real present is the dinner. Hand-printed cotton flour sack — genuinely absorbent, unlike most printed towels.
Flour sack cotton is the only kitchen towel material that actually dries a glass rather than pushing water around it, and most printed novelty towels are not flour sack. This one is, and it is screen-printed by a small US studio rather than sublimated in bulk. Sixteen dollars, folds flat into a card envelope.

Why cotton is the easiest year on the list to get right
Cotton is the second-year material on the traditional US list, and it is the most forgiving material the list offers, because cotton is what the useful soft things in a house are already made of. Paper in year one has to be interpreted. Tin in year ten has to be forgiven. Cotton needs neither: a throw, a tapestry, a stack of coasters and a kitchen towel are all genuinely cotton and all genuinely used, which means you can satisfy the convention without producing a gift whose only point is that it satisfies the convention.
The UK version of the list swaps the first two years around and offers paper or cotton for year one, so if you are buying across the Atlantic either year works for a cotton gift. Both lists are in the source at the foot of this page. The wider material map, year by year, is on the anniversary gifts page.
Woven or printed is the whole decision
There is one test and it costs nothing: look for a photograph of the reverse. On a woven piece the pattern exists on both faces, because the pattern is made of threads going in two directions and it has no front. On a printed piece the back is blank. That difference is not aesthetic, it is structural, and it decides whether the gift is a textile or a billboard made of textile.
Handmade cotton listings are usually honest about which they are, because the weaving is the thing the maker is selling. What they almost never state is thread count or weave density, and you should not expect them to — a handloom weaver is not running a mill QA line. What you can check instead is whether the words handwoven, handloom or hand-knotted appear and whether the listing names a size in inches. Both are true of every pick above. Neither is true of a sublimated throw.
The second anniversary is not a milestone, and that helps
Nobody expects a significant object at two years. That is useful information, because it means the sensible budget here is twenty-five to eighty dollars and the gift that overshoots reads as anxious rather than generous. Two of the picks above sit under twenty dollars and work as part of a larger evening rather than as the evening itself — which is what most second anniversaries actually are.
If you want the budget framed rather than the material, handmade gifts under $50 is the band this year lives in, and gifts under $25 covers the smaller end. The one thing worth spending up for is the throw, because a good cotton throw is in daily use for a decade and a cheap one is a dust cloth inside a year.
Names, dates, or neither
Textiles are the one category where a full name genuinely earns its place. A household accumulates blankets and nobody can tell whose is whose; a name solves a real problem rather than decorating one. A wedding date is the other defensible mark on an anniversary gift, and for the same reason: it is the thing being commemorated.
- Both names, or the date. An anniversary object belongs to two people. One person's initials turn a shared gift into one person's possession, which is the wrong register — handmade anniversary gifts makes the same point about engraving.
- Embroidered, not printed. Thread goes through the cloth and washes with it. Heat transfer sits on top and peels. The handloom throw above is embroidered; most personalized blankets on the marketplace are not.
- Order it early. Embroidery is worked after you buy, so a made-to-order throw is a two-to-three week object, not a two-day one. Last-minute handmade gifts covers what to do when that has already gone wrong.
- Check the spelling twice. Personalized textiles are final sale almost everywhere, and the maker will stitch exactly what you typed.
What the listings actually state
If they already have blankets
This is the common case, because the second anniversary falls at exactly the point where a couple has finished buying soft furnishings for the first time. Two routes work. The first is to go up in scale rather than sideways: a 32-inch woven wall tapestry is cotton, is handmade, and solves a problem a sixth throw does not — most two-year-old households still have one wall that has never been dealt with.
The second is to stop buying textiles for the sofa and buy them for the table. Coasters and a flour sack towel are both genuinely cotton, both cost less than a bottle of wine, and both get used daily rather than seasonally. Pair either with something from handmade ceramics or a serving board and the cotton item does the convention's work while the other half does the gift's.
What cotton cannot do, and when to break the rule
Cotton is not warm. It is a four-season cloth rather than a winter one, which is the right trade for most households and the wrong one for someone who is genuinely cold from October to April. If that is the person you are buying for, the honest move is to leave the material list behind and buy wool or alpaca — knit blankets and throws has those, and nobody has ever been disappointed by a gift for failing to match a convention they did not know about.
Cotton also does not read as expensive, which matters if the anniversary is doubling as an apology or a significant gesture. In that case spend the money on the thing that will still be in the house in twenty years and treat the cotton item as the card.
