The one we would not buy
Engraved boards bought for someone whose name you might spell wrong
Every board on this page is made to order, which almost always means it cannot be returned. A laser burns a permanent mark into wood in about ninety seconds and no seller checks your spelling before it fires. If there is any doubt about a surname, a date or which way round two first names go, buy an unpersonalized board — the [plain boards](/crafts/woodcraft/cutting-boards) are better objects anyway.
The picks, in full

Refine Kitchenware Monogrammed Board, USA Made
by Refine Kitchenware
For a wedding or a new home. A substantially better blank than the budget engraved boards, monogrammed to order.
Most cheap engraved boards are thin bamboo or a light hardwood veneer, which is fine as a keepsake and poor as a tool. This one is a heavier USA-made blank, so it will still be in use after the novelty of the monogram wears off. That is the difference between a gift that gets displayed and a gift that gets used.

Custom Engraved Walnut Board, 9 x 12 in with Groove
by Independent maker
For a board that will actually be used. Solid walnut with a juice groove, engraved to order, at around fifty dollars.
A juice groove is the detail that separates a carving board from a chopping board: it catches what comes out of a roast instead of sending it across the counter. Add walnut rather than a pale budget hardwood and you have a personalized gift that stands up on its own terms. This is the version to buy if the engraved boards above feel too thin.

Two-Tone Maple and Walnut Engraved Board
For someone who wants it to look designed. Maple and walnut laminated together, then engraved, so the wood is doing half the work.
Most engraved boards are a single pale wood chosen because laser marks show up on it. This one is a two-tone lamination, so even before the engraving it looks like something a person made. At around thirty-five dollars it sits between the very cheap engraved blanks and the fifty-plus walnut boards.

Straga Home Sweet Home Engraved Board
by Straga
For a housewarming on a budget. Engraved with the family name and established date, on a hardwood charcuterie blank.
Personalization is the reason this category exists: an engraved board is one of the very few gifts that cannot be re-gifted, which is exactly what makes it read as considered. Straga engrave to order on hardwood blanks. Get the spelling right the first time, because there is no undo on a laser.
Worth knowing first
Personalized items are generally not returnable. Check the name spelling twice before you order.

WGB Retirement Quote Board, Name, Team and Year
by WGB
For a name, a team and a year. Engraved with the name, the team and the year, which is the detail people keep.
Adding the team and the year is what turns a generic retirement object into a record of a specific job. It is the same reason people keep a photo from a leaving do and throw away the card. Hardwood charcuterie blank, engraved to order, under twenty dollars.

Straga Personalized BBQ Trio Board
by Straga
For someone who grills. A larger engraved board aimed squarely at whoever runs the grill.
Grill-adjacent gifts usually mean another set of tongs. A large engraved carving board is the thing that is actually missing from most outdoor kitchens, because meat has to rest somewhere and it should not be a dinner plate. Engraved with a name, which lands better here than on a wedding board.

WGB Mountain Range Engraved Board
by WGB
For a gift without a name on it. A mountain-range engraving with names and date, cheap enough to be a stocking gift.
The design does the work here: it is one of the few engraving motifs that does not read as generic wedding clip art. Under twenty dollars, engraved to order on hardwood. Good for a couple who hike, less good for anyone else.

Straga Olive Leaf Wreath Engraved Board
by Straga
For the safe, universally readable option. Names and date inside an olive wreath, on hardwood, for less than a bottle of champagne.
This is the highest ratio of apparent thoughtfulness to actual spend anywhere on the site. Engraved with both names and the date, it reads as a keepsake; the price says otherwise and nobody will ever know. Pair it with something else if you need the gift to have weight.

What personalization actually is
Almost every personalized board on the market is laser engraved: a machine burns the design into the surface, darkening the wood in a shallow relief. It is fast, it is precise, and it is permanent. A very small number of makers hand-carve or brand instead, and those cost considerably more.
This has a consequence worth being honest about. The engraving is not the handmade part. The board underneath may well be — several here are hardwood boards from small American workshops — but the personalization is machine work, and pricing tells you which is which: a seventeen-dollar engraved board is a bought-in blank with a design burned into it, and a fifty-dollar one is usually a maker's own board with the same process applied.
Neither is dishonest. Both are legitimate products. But it explains the price spread on this page, and it is why we have not ranked purely on price.
When to personalize, and when not to
Personalize when the object is standing in for an event. A wedding, a retirement, a fiftieth anniversary, a first home — in each case the point of the object is that it commemorates something, and a date on it is the whole gift rather than a decoration on it.
Do not personalize when the object is just a good object. A cook who receives an excellent board with someone else's idea of a nice quote burned across the working surface has received a slightly worse board. If the recipient is going to chop on it every day, buy them the best board you can afford and leave it blank.
Engraving on the face or the back?
This is the single most useful thing on this page. An engraving on the working face means the board will be chopped on top of the design, which wears it away and looks worse every year — and it means many recipients simply will not use the board at all, because cutting through a wedding date feels wrong.
An engraving on the back, or in a border outside the chopping area, gives you both: a commemorative object and a usable one. Where a listing shows the design filling the face, treat the board as decorative and size your expectations accordingly.
Lead times, and the December problem
Made to order means a real queue. In ordinary months, one to two weeks from order to doorstep is typical. In late November and December that stretches, because every engraver in the category is running the same backlog at the same time, and the constraint is a machine and a person rather than a warehouse.
Order personalized Christmas gifts by the last week of November. If you are already past that, last-minute handmade gifts covers what ships fast, and none of it is engraved.
Care, which matters more here
An engraved board needs the same care as any other hardwood board — hand wash, dry upright, oil it periodically — with one addition: mineral oil darkens engraved lines slightly, which usually improves them. What ruins them is a dishwasher, which raises the grain around the burn and blurs the edges permanently. Wooden cutting board care covers the routine.
