White elephant gifts
Buy the five-bar handmade essential oil soap set: it is the rare gift under the usual cap that looks like a real present the moment the paper comes off, it appeals to everyone in the room rather than one person in it, and nothing about it is wasted on whoever ends up holding it.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the order of the picks, and we say so when the cheaper thing is the better buy. How this works.
Every pick below is on Amazon Handmade unless the card says otherwise, and every price is the live one. If you want the rules we apply before anything gets listed, they are on how we pick.

The one we would not buy
Anything personalized, and anything that needs a size
This is the one page on this site where personalization is actively wrong. The entire mechanic of a white elephant exchange is that the gift changes hands — it gets opened by one person, stolen by another, and ends the game with somebody who was not in the room when you bought it. A name engraved on it makes it unstealable: nobody takes a board with somebody else's initials on it, and the person stuck with it cannot use it either. The same logic rules out anything sized, anything scented for a specific taste, and anything that only makes sense if you know the recipient. Save the engraved gift for the person you actually chose it for.
The picks, in full

Handmade Essential Oil Soap Set, 5 Bars
For a mixed room, because a five-bar handmade soap set reads as a real gift to everyone. Five cold-process bars scented with essential oil rather than fragrance oil.
The distinction between essential oil and fragrance oil is the one that matters in soap: essential oils are distilled from plants and fade faster, fragrance oils are synthetic and last longer. Makers who use essential oil say so because it costs them more. Five bars is enough to split into two gifts if you need to.
Worth knowing first
Cold-process bars soften if they sit in standing water. Tell the recipient to use a draining dish, or the gift lasts a fortnight.

Melanie's Glass Art Stained Glass Angel Ornament
by Melanie's Glass Art
For the room where one person takes a look and decides they are leaving with it. Cut and soldered stained glass that works as a suncatcher once the tree comes down.
Stained glass is the one ornament craft where you can see the whole process in the finished object: each piece of colored glass is scored, broken, ground to fit and joined with solder lines you can trace with a fingernail. That also makes it the only ornament on this page with a second job - hang it in a window in January and it is a suncatcher, which is more than most Christmas objects manage. Sold directly by the glass artist.
Worth knowing first
Stock on a one-person glass studio is genuinely small, so this can sell out inside a week in December - if the buy link shows it unavailable, that is the reason. Soldered glass is also heavier than it looks and wants a sturdy branch.

Teakwood and Tobacco Reed Diffuser
For an office exchange where half the usual answers land badly. The candle alternative for homes with cats, toddlers or a landlord.
A meaningful share of the people you would give a candle to cannot have one burning, and a reed diffuser solves that without changing the gift's intent. Teakwood and tobacco is a warm, dry scent rather than a sweet one, which suits a hallway or an office better than a bedroom. Stated two to three month life.

Wax and Wit Bayberry, Cranberry and Cedar Candle
by Wax and Wit
For the person who wants a gift nobody is disappointed by and nobody fights over. The seasonal scent done without the cinnamon-bomb approach.
Bayberry is the traditional American Christmas candle scent and it has largely been displaced by cinnamon and pine. Cranberry and cedar keep it from turning sweet. Under twenty dollars, hand-poured, and the right thing to hand over at the door in December.

Whiskey and Bourbon Flavored Lip Balm
For a room that wants the joke gift to also be a thing someone will use. Six dollars fifty, funny once, and actually usable afterwards.
The white-elephant category is full of things that get binned in January. This one lands the joke and then goes in a coat pocket and gets used, which is the entire bar for a novelty gift. Handmade balm, so it is a real product with a real ingredient list rather than a printed tube of nothing.

Woven Macrame Cotton Coasters, Pair
For a strict low cap, or a second gift because the rules turned out to allow two. Nine dollars for two hand-knotted cotton coasters — the cheapest way to finish a gift box.
A board, a mug and a candle is a good gift box and a hard one; it is all hard edges. Two cotton coasters change the texture for under ten dollars. Absorbent and washable, unlike cork or slate, which is the practical argument for cotton coasters generally.

The rules are not the same as Secret Santa
People use the two names interchangeably and then buy the wrong thing. In a Secret Santa you draw one name and buy for one person, so the usual advice applies: think about them, and personalize if you can. A white elephant exchange — Yankee swap, dirty Santa, same game under different names — has no assignment at all. Everyone brings one anonymous gift to a pile, and the gifts get taken, unwrapped and stolen in turn until the rounds run out.
That single difference inverts the brief. Your gift is not being chosen for a person; it is being competed over by a room. It has to be instantly legible when the paper comes off, because the decision to steal it is made in about two seconds and from several feet away. It has to be something almost anyone in the room would be glad to take home, because you do not know who ends up with it. And it has to be anonymous, which is the opposite of nearly every other recommendation on this site. If you drew a name instead, Secret Santa gifts is the page you want.
What actually gets stolen
Across every version of this game the same four properties decide which gifts move and which sit there.
- It reads from across the room
- A set of five soap bars, a stained-glass panel catching the light, a candle — whoever is sitting at the far end of the table can see what it is without being told. A gift that needs an explanation never gets stolen, however good it is.
- Anyone could want it
- Kitchen, bath and table goods are the safest ground because every person in the room has a kitchen and a bathroom. Anything tied to a hobby, a team or a taste eliminates most of the field instantly.
- It looks like it cost more than the cap
- This is where handmade has a structural advantage. A five-bar soap set or a piece of hand-cut stained glass looks nothing like the mass-market gift set the room is braced for, which is precisely why it moves.
- It survives the handling
- It is going to be unwrapped, passed down a table and carried home in a coat pocket or a tote. Nothing fragile, nothing that needs refrigerating, nothing in a box that only closes once.
What the listings actually state
Reading the cap, which is usually vaguer than it sounds
Almost every invitation gives a number and almost none of them means it strictly. The useful move is to land visibly under it rather than exactly on it, because a gift that is obviously cheaper than the cap and obviously better made than the cap suggests is the combination that wins. Handmade small goods are good at that: a five-bar soap set or a pair of woven coasters costs less than a mass-market gift set and looks like it cost more.
Where you do have a hard number, gifts under $25 is the band this game almost always sits in, and stocking stuffers covers the same price tier for a different purpose.
The two failure modes
- The gag gift nobody wants to own. The joke lands, the room laughs, and then one person has to take it home. A joke gift works when it is also a usable object — flavored lip balm, a strange but real serving piece. It fails when the joke is the entire product.
- The gift card. It gets stolen every single round, which looks like success and is actually the opposite: it ends the game early, it takes the fun out of the rounds, and in many groups it is explicitly against the rules. Bring an object.
- The food that has to be eaten tonight. It does not survive the swap, it cannot be re-stolen without awkwardness, and whoever ends up with it is carrying a plate home.
- The scented thing for a very specific taste. A candle is safe; a heavy single-note fragrance that half the room will dislike is not. Gifts for candle lovers covers the version of this gift where you know who it is for.
Wrapping it, which matters more here than anywhere else
In a normal exchange the wrapping is a courtesy. Here it is the entire pitch, because the pile is what people choose from before anyone knows what is inside. A gift in a plain shop bag gets picked last and taken home by whoever was left. Wrap it properly, keep it a shape that is hard to guess, and do not label it with a name.
Wrapping a handmade gift covers the practical side, including what to do with awkward shapes. If you want to combine two of these picks into one gift that holds together as a theme, building a handmade gift box is the method.
