Handmade going-away gifts
Buy the Northwind full-grain valet tray. It is personalized, made in the USA, under thirty dollars, and it is the one desk object that works whether the person is moving to a new company, a new city or nothing in particular — which is exactly the problem a leaving gift has to solve.
We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes the order of the picks, and we say so when the cheaper thing is the better buy. How this works.
Every pick below is on Amazon Handmade unless the card says otherwise, and every price is the live one. If you want the rules we apply before anything gets listed, they are on how we pick.

The one we would not buy
Anything engraved with the company name or logo
This is the default and it is the wrong instinct. A leaving gift travels with the person into a life that does not include your employer, and an object branded with the old job either gets left in a drawer or becomes mildly awkward on a new desk. The exception is a genuine in-joke the whole team shares, and even then put it in the card rather than on the object. A name, an initial or a date works everywhere. A logo works for about three weeks.
The picks, in full

Northwind Personalized Full Grain Valet Tray
by Northwind
For anyone leaving, because everybody has keys and nobody buys a tray for them. Full grain, made in the USA, personalized, and still under thirty dollars.
Valet trays are the single most reliable gift for someone you do not know well: everyone has keys, and nobody buys themselves a tray to put them in. Full grain at this price is unusual and is the reason this one is here rather than one of the dozen near-identical listings. The snap corners flatten for shipping, which also makes it easy to wrap.

Hand-Thrown Pottery Mug in Shale
by North Carolina pottery
For the person who is about to hand back the company mug and own nothing to replace it. Thrown on a wheel in North Carolina, and the throwing rings are still visible.
A wheel-thrown mug is asymmetric in the way a hand is asymmetric: the walls vary slightly in thickness, the handle is pulled rather than molded, and you can feel the rings under your fingers. That is the whole difference between this and a mug from a supermarket, and it is the difference people notice every single morning. Shale is a muted gray-brown glaze that goes with everything.

Ox & Pine Refillable Full Grain Journal
by Ox & Pine
For a colleague going to something specific — a new job, a degree, their own business. Full grain with an elastic closure and a refillable insert, so the cover outlives the paper.
The refill is the whole argument. A bound leather journal is finished when the pages run out; a refillable cover becomes the object they keep for a decade while the inserts cycle through. Full grain means it will look worse for six months and then better forever. This is the right gift for a writer and the wrong one for someone who has been on page four of the same notebook since 2019.

Personalized Leather Catchall Tray
For a whole-team whip-round where the per-head budget is a few dollars. The sub-twenty option, and the one to buy in quantity for a team.
Corporate and team gifting fails when the per-head budget forces you into branded plastic. A small personalized leather dish clears that bar and does not look like swag. Buy one to check the quality before you commit to fifteen — worth doing at any price, and especially at this one.
Worth knowing first
Thinner leather than the trays above. Fine as a dish, not an heirloom.

Northwind Personalized Full Grain Loop Keychain
by Northwind
For a dozen of the same thing, personalized, when the whole floor wants to give something. Full grain leather, personalized, and under thirteen dollars.
Full grain at this price is unusual, and it is the reason this beats the dozens of near-identical loop keychains: cheap keychain leather cracks at the fold within a year, full grain does not. Personalization is stamped rather than printed. This is the most repeatable gift on the site — it works for a class, a team, a wedding party or a stocking.

Northwind Personalized Leather Bookmark
by Northwind
For a reader, and the only sub-ten-dollar gift here that is not a consumable. Full grain leather, stamped with a name, under ten dollars.
A leather bookmark is the rare cheap gift with no downside: it does not take up shelf space, it does not need dusting, and a reader will use it every day. Full grain means it flattens into the book rather than curling out of it. This is the best sub-ten-dollar gift on the whole site.

Lulu Candles Vanilla Spice Wood Wick Soy Jar Candle
by Lulu Candles
For a colleague two desks over, where vanilla is the least likely scent to misfire. The same jar and wick as its sibling above, in vanilla rather than wood.
Vanilla is about as broadly acceptable as a fragrance gets without disappearing entirely, and the listing pairs it with clove, amber and tobacco so it lands warm rather than sugary. Same 9 oz frosted jar, same natural wood wick, same soy-blend wax and US hand-pouring as the Santal above, at the same price. If you are buying for a colleague or an in-law and want the crackle without a scent gamble, this is the pick.
Worth knowing first
A soy blend rather than 100% soy, and the listing states no burn time — the ounce count is the only number you get.

Holtz Leather Monticello Desk Caddy
by Holtz Leather Company
For someone moving into a role with a desk of their own for the first time. A structured leather caddy with compartments, from a workshop that puts its name on it.
A valet tray is a dish. A caddy is a dish with opinions about where the pen goes, and for a cluttered desk that is the difference between using it and ignoring it. Holtz is a named workshop with a traceable maker, which matters more on a desk object than on a wallet — this one sits in view all day.

Leaving is not retiring, and the gift is different
Both occasions involve a card and a collection, and they call for opposite objects. A retirement gift marks the end of a working life, so it is allowed to be commemorative and a bit ceremonial — the date on it is the point. A going-away gift marks a transition into something unknown, which means a commemorative object is slightly off-key. The right gift here is useful, portable, and silent about where it came from.
That narrows the field in a helpful way. It rules out plaques, framed photographs of the team and anything that only makes sense in the building they are leaving. It rules in desk objects, carry objects and consumables. And it explains why this page leans on leather trays, mugs and journals rather than keepsakes: those are the things that go in a box, come out in a different office, and get used.
Three questions that decide the whole purchase
- Are you buying alone or as a group? A whip-round changes the maths entirely. Fifteen people at three dollars each buys one serious object; fifteen people buying their own thing buys fifteen small ones. Decide which before anyone collects money.
- Do you know where they are going? If it is a specific next thing — a new role, a course, a business — buy for that. A refillable journal makes sense for someone starting something. If the answer is they are just leaving, buy for the desk and the keys instead.
- How well do you actually know them? The honest answer is usually not very, and that is fine. A tray, a plain mug or a mild scent is correct at that distance. A personalized object with a message on it is not.
If the answer to the first question is a team with a budget, corporate and client gifts covers the quantity problem properly, including why a small handmade object beats branded swag at the same price per head.
The desk problem nobody mentions
Here is a specific and reliable gap: almost everything on a person's desk belongs to the employer. The monitor, the chair, the mug from the kitchen, the notebooks from the stationery cupboard. When someone leaves, they walk out with a lanyard and a plant, and the next desk starts empty.
That makes a desk object an unusually well-aimed leaving gift, and it is why a wheel-thrown mug from a named studio sits second on this page. It is the first thing they will own on the new desk, it costs about the same as a bunch of flowers from the supermarket, and it is visibly not corporate issue. A leather caddy or tray does the same job for whatever the desk accumulates.
What the picks cost and how many you can buy
If you are buying for the whole floor
Buying fifteen of one small handmade thing is a genuinely good strategy and it has one rule: buy one first and look at it. Handmade means unit-to-unit variation is normal, and what reads as character on one object can read as a defect across fifteen laid out on a table. A single sample costs under twenty dollars and removes the entire risk.
- Stamped, not laser-printed. A stamped initial sinks into leather and ages with it. Printing sits on top and lifts.
- Allow for the lead time. Personalized items are made after the order. Two weeks is the safe assumption and longer in December.
- Keep the text short. Initials over names, and nothing that references the job.
- One person orders. Fifteen separate orders arrive over three weeks in fifteen different shades of the same leather.
Timing, which is the part that usually goes wrong
Notice periods are short and the collection always starts late. Anything personalized needs two weeks, which means the decision has to happen in the first few days of the notice period, not the last. If you are already inside a week, buy something unpersonalized and good rather than something personalized and rushed — last-minute handmade gifts has the cut-offs and the alternatives.
The other timing trap is the card. A card signed by everyone is the part the person actually keeps, and it takes longer to circulate than anyone plans for. Start it before you choose the gift. If you want the presentation to look considered, wrapping a handmade gift covers doing it without a shop's gift service, and building a handmade gift box covers combining two or three small things into one.
