Why offcut leather makes this band work

A keychain uses about four square inches of leather. That is smaller than the waste from cutting a wallet, which means the material cost of a leather keychain is close to zero for any workshop that also makes bigger things — the leather is already paid for.

Personalized or plain?

Two things. The ring join — a keychain fails where the leather meets the metal ring, either by tearing through the punched hole or by the rivet pulling out. A join that is both riveted and stitched is what you want; a folded tab held by a single rivet is what usually fails.

And thickness. A thin leather fob folded over a ring will wear through at the fold within a couple of years of being pulled out of a pocket. Thicker leather, or a braided construction like the Trip Machine piece, moves the failure point out to a decade or more.

One small thing is not a gift

This is worth saying plainly, because it is the way this whole category is most often misused. A single ten-dollar keychain handed over on its own reads as an afterthought, whatever its quality.
