Monogram order and etiquette
The one thing to remember: in the classic three-letter monogram the SURNAME initial goes in the middle and is the largest, so Jane Avery Mitchell is J M A — not J A M. If all three letters are the same size, the order flips to plain initials, J A M. Nearly every engraving mistake in this category is those two forms getting mixed up.

The two forms, and why they are confused
There are two completely different conventions in use, they look similar in a thumbnail, and the difference is entirely about letter size.
- The classic monogram
- Three letters, the middle one noticeably larger. The large centre letter is the SURNAME. The smaller letter on the left is the first name, and the smaller letter on the right is the middle name. Jane Avery Mitchell becomes J M A, with the M large.
- Block initials
- Three letters at the same size, read left to right in the order the name is said: first, middle, last. Jane Avery Mitchell becomes J A M. Because nothing is emphasised, nothing is out of order.
- A single initial
- One letter, and it is the surname initial — M for the Mitchell household. This is the form that never goes wrong and it is the right choice on anything small.
The confusion is structural rather than anyone's fault. An engraving order form asks for three boxes in a row, and people type their name into them in the order they say it. If the machine then renders the middle box larger, the result is a monogram that reads as though the person's surname is their middle name. Always check whether the listing's preview shows a larger centre letter before you fill the boxes.
Couples, which is where it genuinely gets argued about
For a married couple sharing a surname, the standard form is a three-letter monogram with the shared surname initial large in the middle, one partner's first initial on the left and the other's on the right. The traditional ordering puts the wife's initial on the left; plenty of modern engravers simply alphabetise the two first initials, which avoids the question and is increasingly what you will find offered.
Where the couple do not share a surname, a three-letter monogram has nowhere to put the large centre letter and the form breaks. Use two first initials with an ampersand, or two full first names, or a single shared object with no name on it at all. This is a genuinely common situation now and trying to force the traditional form produces something that looks like a mistake.
For a wedding gift there is one more trap: a monogram with the new married surname is only correct if they are taking it, and you frequently do not know. Two first names and the year is always safe. Gifts for newlyweds covers the rest of that problem and unique handmade wedding gifts covers the wedding itself.
Which form to use, and when
Match the form to the object, not to tradition. Three rules cover almost everything.
- Small object, single initial. A keychain, a bookmark, a card holder, a pendant. Three letters on something two inches across is a smudge from any normal distance. The surname initial alone reads cleanly and still says whose it is.
- Household object, surname or classic monogram. A board, a tray, a serving piece. These belong to a house rather than a person, so the surname is the right unit — either spelled out or as the large centre letter.
- Personal object, block initials or a first name. A journal, a spoon, a valet tray that lives on one dresser. This is one person's thing, and their initials in the order they say them is friendlier than a formal monogram.

Refine Kitchenware Monogrammed Board, USA Made
by Refine Kitchenware
For a monogram on an object that gets used daily rather than displayed. A substantially better blank than the budget engraved boards, monogrammed to order.
Most cheap engraved boards are thin bamboo or a light hardwood veneer, which is fine as a keepsake and poor as a tool. This one is a heavier USA-made blank, so it will still be in use after the novelty of the monogram wears off. That is the difference between a gift that gets displayed and a gift that gets used.

Northwind Personalized Full Grain Valet Tray
by Northwind
For a stamped monogram on leather, where a single initial often reads best. Full grain, made in the USA, personalized, and still under thirty dollars.
Valet trays are the single most reliable gift for someone you do not know well: everyone has keys, and nobody buys themselves a tray to put them in. Full grain at this price is unusual and is the reason this one is here rather than one of the dozen near-identical listings. The snap corners flatten for shipping, which also makes it easy to wrap.

Northwind Personalized Leather Bookmark
by Northwind
For the smallest sensible monogram, where three letters is already a crowd. Full grain leather, stamped with a name, under ten dollars.
A leather bookmark is the rare cheap gift with no downside: it does not take up shelf space, it does not need dusting, and a reader will use it every day. Full grain means it flattens into the book rather than curling out of it. This is the best sub-ten-dollar gift on the whole site.

SilveristicJewelry Personalized Initial Necklace
by SilveristicJewelry
For a single initial worn rather than engraved, which sidesteps the order question. A single letter in nickel-free 925 sterling, made to order in five chain lengths with an extender.
Personalization usually narrows a gift until only one person could ever wear it. An initial is the exception: specific to the recipient and still completely neutral in style, which is why it survives taste changing. The genuinely useful detail here is the sizing - the listing offers 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 inch chains plus a 1.5 inch extender, so you can buy a length rather than hope. Stated as nickel-free solid sterling rather than plated base metal.
Worth knowing first
Made to order means it is not a next-day gift - order with time in hand. The gold and rose gold versions are plating over sterling and will wear thin at the edges in a few years; the plain silver will not.

When not to monogram at all
A monogram is a commitment, and there are four situations where it is the wrong call however nice the object is.
- A white elephant or any swapped gift. The whole point is that it changes hands. A name makes it unstealable and useless. White elephant gifts explains the mechanic.
- A gift to an engaged couple before the wedding. Surnames are unresolved, and an engraved wrong assumption is permanent.
- Anything that might need returning. Personalized items generally cannot be, including for size or colour. If the object has a size, resolve the size before you resolve the name.
- A gift where you are not sure of the spelling. Hearing a surname said aloud is not knowing how it is spelled. Verify it in writing. There is no undo on a laser or a stamping press.
How it is applied, and what that changes
Three techniques dominate handmade personalisation and they behave differently. Laser engraving burns into wood and most plastics: crisp, permanent, and it darkens the surface so it reads best on pale woods. Leather is usually blind-stamped or hot-foiled — a pressed impression with no colour, or an impression filled with metallic foil. Blind stamping is subtle to the point of being easy to miss in a photograph, which is exactly why people like it on a wallet or a tray. Metal is either stamped with a punch letter by letter, which gives slightly irregular spacing that is part of the look, or machine-engraved, which does not.
Two consequences for the text. Hand-stamped metal and leather both have a hard letter limit — the maker is physically striking each character, so three letters is normal and a sentence is not. And laser engraving on wood loses thin script at small sizes; a medium-weight letterform survives. What to engrave on a cutting board covers the wood case in detail, including why it goes on the back.
For the objects themselves, personalized handmade gifts for men and personalized gifts for women are the two roundups, and personalized cutting boards is the deepest single category.
